Save the date! On *Sunday 22nd November, 11am - 1pm*, Wikimedia UK will be
holding the fourth annual *Wikimedia UK Community Celebration*.
This is now a regular fixture in Wikimedia UK's annual calendar of events
and something we very much look forward to.
As in previous years, this online event will be a *celebration* of what the
Wikimedia UK community has achieved in the last year, a *recognition* of
that work through the Wikimedian of the Year awards, and an opportunity to
*showcase* some of the incredible, often unseen work on Wiki projects that
has taken place across the UK over the last year. We very much hope that
you can make it and look forward to seeing you there!

About the event
This session will introduce the Wikidata Reference Validator tool, which
helps identify whether references used in Wikidata items are still
accessible or have gone offline. Reliable references are essential for
ensuring the quality and trustworthiness of Wikidata, and this session will
focus on practical ways to improve them.
Participants will learn how to:
1. Use the Reference Validator tool to check if references are active or
broken 2. Understand why maintaining valid references is important for
Wikidata 3. Navigate from the tool to Wikidata to fix and update references
This will be a hands-on, beginner-friendly workshop where participants can
follow along, explore the tool, and work on real Wikidata items together.
By the end of the session, participants will have improved references and
gained confidence in maintaining data quality on Wikidata.
About the presenters
Josef Anthony is a Wikimedian focused on Wikidata, technical contributions,
and community capacity building. He is the founder of the Arewa TechCom
initiative and has led training sessions focused on Wikimedia tools, data
quality, and underrepresented knowledge.
Nurah Wakili is an emerging Wikimedian from the Arewa Techcom community
with an interest in Wikidata, Wikimedia tools, and technical skills
development. She will be co-facilitating the session as part of ongoing
community capacity-building efforts.
About the Sandbox Sessions
Sandbox Sessions are volunteer-led events organised and supported by
Wikimedia UK. All are welcome to attend! These workshops are intended to be
a chance for our community to learn about different areas of the
Wiki-verse, find out something new, and connect with other Wikimedians.
They're also an opportunity for our community to share their interests with
other Wikimedians!

Are you a passionate Wikipedia editor? Would you like to learn how you can
share your passion for Wikipedia editing (and contributing to other free
open knowledge Wikimedia projects) by running Wikipedia editing events to
train new editors and communities? If so, our fully funded flagship Train
the Trainer (TtT) course is taking place September till October 2026 and
will equip you with the skills and resources needed to deliver successful
Wiki editing events to support the UK wiki community. The course is fully
funded by Wikimedia UK and the course can be fulfilled alongside other
commitments. We would love to hear from you if you would like to take part.
Wikimedia UK Volunteer trainers
Volunteer trainers play a key role in the delivery of Wikimedia UK
programmes, and contribute to Wikimedia projects being free from systemic
and systematic bias and recognised as a vital source of reliable knowledge
and information. They support other editors to be part of Wikimedia
projects creating a welcoming and supportive environment to facilitate
contribution to open knowledge projects. They train new and existing
editors and communities across the country, in-person, online or in hybrid
sessions. Trainers deliver events fielded to them by Wikimedia UK and build
relationships within their own communities to deliver Wiki editing events
and support open knowledge.
Train the trainer course
The TtT course will equip candidate trainers with the skills, experience
and resources to deliver a standard ‘Introduction to Wikipedia’ edit-a-thon
and other Wiki editing events. In advance of the in-person sessions in
October, participants will complete a four week WikiLearn course

a commitment of approx 1-2 hours per week.
The in-person training will take place in Birmingham. On completion of the
TtT course you will have access to the experience and knowledge of
accredited trainers, through our mentorship scheme, where you will be
matched with a mentor (an experienced Wikimedia UK accredited trainer) who
can support you during the first year in your role. You will also have
access to regular training and resources to further develop your skills as
a trainer.
Attendance at all events and completion of the WikiLearn course are
essential.
Course content and key dates

Expressions of interest are welcomed from all based in the UK. However, we
are actively seeking and would particularly welcome applicants from Black,
South Asian and minority groups; women; and members of the LGBT+ community.
What you could expect from us

To lead training for a minimum of 2 events per year. This would be a
mixture of third party events which we would field to you, and those you
would organise yourself. Please note that we do receive requests for
training to be delivered within office hours.

To be responsive to communication from Wikimedia UK staff and fellow
volunteers and Event Organisers, including in advance of the event.

To complete basic reporting and evaluation of your events.

To represent Wikimedia UK well during the time in which you are
volunteering.

*About the session*
Translation plays a major role in expanding free knowledge on Wikimedia
projects. Through translation, knowledge created in one language becomes
accessible to speakers of other languages, thereby promoting linguistic
diversity, inclusiveness, and knowledge equity.
Despite the availability of translation tools on Wikimedia platforms, many
translated articles suffer from poor language structure, direct machine
translation, and lack of proper references. This reduces the quality and
reliability of translated content. Many new translators also lack proper
orientation on best practices for article translation. Hence, this event
intends to provide practical hints and tips that can improve the quality of
translated articles on Wikimedia projects.
