Hello everyone,
The Altea Gallery <https://www.alteagallery.com/> have got in touch with
some queries about sharing images on Wikimedia Commons.
"We hold a substantial archive of high-resolution images and professionally
> researched descriptions that we believe could support education, research,
> and public access, aligning closely with the goals of the GLAM-Wiki
> initiative. We’d love to explore how we might contribute. One idea would be
> to offer thematic sets of public domain material."
I can set up a meeting to discuss their ideas further, but would need a
volunteer who would be interested in helping them share the images (and
perhaps join the call). Let me know if it's of interest.

Dear all,
I hope you had a lovely long weekend. I’m Ziski from the Wikimedia
Foundation’s Global Advocacy team; I’m based in London and have been
fortunate to meet some of you. I am reaching out with an* important update
about UK regulatory affairs. *
On 8 May, 2025, the Wikimedia Foundation announced a legal challenge
against a new element of the UK Online Safety Act,
<https://wikimediafoundation.org/news/2023/09/19/wikimedia-foundation-calls-…>which
could have detrimental effects for Wikipedia. This is an aspect of the same
law that the Foundation has been warning the government about in
parliamentary debates and an open letter campaign, which many of you
supported. We are bringing a legal challenge because the negative impacts
that this law threatens to have on Wikipedia have not been addressed.
The challenge targets the Categorisation Regulations, which are currently
so broadly written that Wikipedia could be classified as a “Category 1”
service. As a Category 1 service, Wikipedia could face duties that would
threaten our mission, for example, by disempowering users who wish to keep
their identity private. In

blog post

you
can learn more about our legal challenge.
The Foundation will also be hosting a Zoom call on Tuesday, May 13 @ 18:00
- 19:00 BST to answer any questions you may have. Please register for the
call *via this link

Afternoon folks,
Just to let you know that the second in our *Sandbox Sessions* programme is
now open for registration - with *Femke Nijsse* telling us about How to
calmly edit in controversial areas
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Event:WMUK_Sandbox_Sessions/How_to_calmly_edi…>
on
Saturday 6 September, 11:00-12:00 UK time.
*Editing in controversial areas can be daunting. In this session, we'll
talk about strategies to avoid conflict, bring these articles through the
'good article' or 'featured article' process and if conflict does arise,
which dispute resolution process works best at resolving the issues.
Examples will be drawn from climate and health-related editing.*
*Femke Nijsse* is an experienced editor who has worked on a range of tricky
and sometimes controversial topics, from climate change and net zero to
contested illnesses. She’s helped several of these articles make it through
the Good Article and Featured Article processes.
A reminder that we also have Josef Anthony's session *Using Duplicity:
Create missing Wikidata items from Wikipedia
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Event:WMUK_Sandbox_Sessions/Using_Duplicity_3…>*
coming
up on Saturday 30th August, 17:00-18:00 UK time.
I'm really excited about these sessions, and the others that we have coming
up - hope to see you there!
All the best,
Sara

Hi there folks!
Delighted to announce that the first of our *Sandbox Sessions* will take
place on Saturday 30th August, 5pm UK time (ie, UTC+1)
*Using Duplicity: Create Missing Wikidata Items from Wikipedia
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Event:WMUK_Sandbox_Sessions/Using_Duplicity_3…>*
will
be run by Josef Anthony, a Wikimedia volunteer and contributor with
experience in Wikidata, Wikipedia, and technical projects within the
Wikimedia movement. Josef recently led the Wikidata project Revitalising UK
History
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Revitalizing_UK_History/Project_Report>,
supported by a Wikimedia UK volunteer grant.
This one hour session will introduce the Wikidata tool Wikidata:Duplicity
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Duplicity>, which helps identify Wikipedia
articles that do not have a Wikidata item, and match them to an existing
item or create a new one.
The session will be hands-on and beginner-friendly, with time to explore
the tool together and make real contributions. It’s ideal for editors who
are curious about Wikidata but unsure where to start, or for anyone who
wants to improve Wikidata coverage using content that already exists in
English Wikipedia.
The event will be held on Zoom, and you can sign up using your Wikimedia
account here.

Please do feel free to share this with anyone you feel might be interested!

Hello everyone,
I hope this finds you well.
This month we are highlighting some suggestions from the UK community on
small Wikimedia tasks that you can get involved in. Read on for more
information on how just a little bit of your time can make knowledge more
accessible and accurate.
August Mini Wiki
As it’s the holiday season, for August’s Mini Wiki we are showcasing *The
Dist**ributed Game*, devised and developed by a UK community member, Mike
Peel. The game matches new Wikipedia articles against Wikidata items. Once
linked, anything related to that topic which is updated in Wikidata, will
cascade across all language versions of Wikipedia, helping to make data
consistency better across Wikipedias, and it also makes updating all
Wikipedias as easy as one edit in Wikidata.
You can access the game here
<https://wikidata-game.toolforge.org/distributed/#game=82&opt=%7B%22type%22%…>
with
your Wikimedia account.
Below is a step-by-step guide on how to play the game!
1. *Log in!* Click the login button, you’ll be taken to a Wikimedia
website where you should log in with your Wikimedia account, and then grant
the Distributed game OAuth permissions to post edits using your account.
2. *Select* your preferred language under ‘Entry type’, or leave it on
‘Any’ to have random languages shown.
3. *Compare* the Wikidata item (top) against the new Wikipedia article
(bottom), to see if they match.
4. If you are not sure, *click on the links* to look at the Wikidata
item and Wikipedia article in more detail. You can also click on the
language button below the Wikidata QID to see previews of other Wikipedia
articles already linked to the Wikidata item.
5. *If you’re still not sure *of the match, click ‘Skip’, and you’ll
move on to the next possible match.
6. If it is definitely* not a match*, click ‘No’, and the game will no
longer show it (and if this was the last possible match for the article, Pi
bot will shortly create a new item for the article)
7. If it is* definitely a match*, click ‘Match’ – and the game will edit
Wikidata using your account to add the new sitelink.
Simple and easy, and you’ll probably learn some interesting facts along the
way!
Our second mini task for August is also a suggestion from UK community
member, Dr Martin Poulter, Wikimedian in Residence at the Khalili Foundation
<https://www.khalili.foundation/>. They are collaborating with UNESCO
<https://www.unesco.org/en/memory-world> to improve the visibility of
the Memory
of the World International Register,
<https://www.unesco.org/en/memory-world/grid> which describes 570 pieces of
important cultural heritage from around the world.
Links on English Wikipedia articles which point to the Memory of the World
register are broken and need to be fixed. A few minutes of your time can
help to make this knowledge more accurate and accessible.
Below is a step-by-step guide on how to fix the links!
1. Here
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/UNESCO_Memory_of_the_World_project/broken_l…>
is
a table of all the English Wikipedia articles, with a corresponding link
which includes the name of the cultural heritage piece on the register.
Find a link you would like to fix in the table.
2. Open up the Memory of the World International Register
<https://www.unesco.org/en/memory-world/grid> and search for the item
using the name at the end of the old link. When searching, it is important
to *click the Search button* and not press return in the search box.
Copy the link.
3. Open the English Wikipedia article and scroll down to the*
References* section
and replace the old link with the new link.
4. Remember to update the access-date
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Citation_access-date> of the
link if one is included in the Wikipedia citation.
5. Once you’ve fixed a link, put a “x” in the final column of the table
to mark it as done.
Thank you! To help us keep track of how Mini Wiki is being used, please use
the #wmuk in your edit summary, where possible. We’d love to hear from you
on your experience of using Mini Wiki. If you have an idea for a task that
you would like the UK community’s help with that is quick and simple, then
email rupal.karia(a)wikimedia.org.uk.
