Hi all,
I thought this event might be of interest to Wikimedia folks:
https://open.science-retreat.org/OSR26UK/
The retreat takes place in early April next year. It's great to see the
open science community creating space for something like this. It's an
unconference format and there's no guaranteed wiki element, but it's likely
there will be people interested in open access and open knowledge, and they
may be interested in Wikimedia.

Hi there folks,
Just to let you know that the video from Martin's Wikisource
Transcribe-a-thon is now available to view here:
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Event:WMUK_Sandbox_Sessions/Wikimedia_project…
We've got one more Sandbox Session coming up before the end of the year,
and then one in January!
On Wednesday 10th December, we'll hear from Lucy Moore, who'll be talking
about Wikimedia projects and smell-related content:
*Wikimedia projects and smell-related content: ideas on where, how, and why
to add it*
*Mulled wine and oranges, the piney scent of indoor spruce, cloves and
other spices … no it’s not a description of a new scented candle, but some
of the smells that come to mind for people who celebrate Christmas in the
UK! Join editor Lucy Moore a Seasonal Sandbox Session to explore how
smell-related information can enrich Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata!*
*The session will involve a short introduction to why olfactory experiences
are essential for human knowledge, as well as demonstrations of how to add
scent and smell to Wikidata, and ways to incorporate it into Wikimedia
Commons. The session also includes open time for editing, using either a
suggested list or your own ideas. Incorporating smell-related data is not
widely used across projects yet, so there’s lots of potential for new ideas
and contributions. Interested? You can find more information here
<https://eu-west-1.protection.sophos.com/?d=wikimedia.org&u=aHR0cHM6Ly9tZXRh…>

<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikiProject_Smell>, or on
this TikTok <https://www.tiktok.com/@wiki_lucy/video/7509564499184258327>.*
*Lucy Moore* is an experienced Wikipedia editor, who mostly edits about
women. She got interested in smell in 2023 and has been promoting its
inclusion in Wikimedia projects since then. You can see her describe some
of her editing here <https://www.tiktok.com/@wiki_lucy>.

Hello everyone,
In part prompted by industry concern around the future of cultural heritage
data on the sketchfab.com platform, Wikimedia UK and Thomas Flynn are
collaborating on a user research project *UK Heritage 3D Data at
Risk: Developing a Strategy for Long Term Access & Storage*.
*[image:
H3DARlaunchGIF-MadewithClipchamp1-ezgif.com-video-to-gif-converter.gif]*
This project will undertake a period of focused stakeholder research into
the needs of the UK heritage sector with regards to management and
exploitation of digital 3D data. Essentially we're seeking to answer the
question:
*"What would a ‘Sketchfab for UK heritage’ look like and how would it work
to best serve cultural heritage professionals and audiences alike?"*
The project activities are pretty straightforward:
- Ask stakeholders (folks in the UK producing and working with cultural
heritage 3D data) what they think & need via questionnaires, interviews,
and workshops.
- Survey the current online 3D data infrastructure ecosystem.
- Synthesise this information into an open access report that a) develop
guidance for UK heritage organisations of all sizes on best practice
related to these themes and b) suggest opportunities for solutions and
infrastructure where none currently exists.
I am very excited to be working on this project and *if you create or
manage 3D data within a UK heritage organization, I encourage you to join
in and share your needs with us*:

Hi folks!
Just a wee reminder that we have x2 Sandbox Sessions coming up before the
end of the year. These events are held on Zoom, register using your Wiki
account, and we'll send the link the day before the event.
- *WikiSource Transcribe-a-thon* - Thursday 20th November, 6pm-8pm UTC.
Led by Dr Martin Poulter, this event will introduce Wikisource: a community
that is building a huge library of freely available texts. Together we will
transcribe a pamphlet or paper and explore how 1) contributing to
Wikisource can be a rewarding hobby and 2) how transcribe-a-thon events can
be part of a campaign to highlight kinds of literature and
knowledge. *Register
for this event.

To celebrate Kindness Day on November 13 we are showcasing ways to practise
small acts of kindness on Wikimedia projects. Wikimedia Projects would not
exist without the support of the global community of volunteers, people
like you, who contribute to the projects.
Recognising and appreciating others can help other editors feel valued for
their contributions and it can leave you with a “warm glow” too! Here are
some suggestions on ways you can spread a little kindness on the Wikimedia
projects.
-
Why not take a few minutes to thank someone and recognise their
contribution to the Wikimedia projects on their user page or use this
simple feature <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Notifications/Thanks>
on the history page of an article.
-
Maybe you’ve been impressed by someone’s contribution or used someone’s
image in an article, why not send them a note to let them know their
efforts are appreciated?
-
If you have led a Wikipedia training session recently, why not say hello
to the people who attended and check in with them to see how they are
getting on?
-
Wish someone a happy birthday on Wiki by joining the Birthday Committee
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Birthday_Committee>!
-
The Wikimedia Foundation’s Editing Team has put in a new feature which
makes it easier to thank comments. See this diff post for more info
<https://diff.wikimedia.org/2025/10/13/revolutionizing-gratitude-a-new-era-o…>
.
-
Recognise somebody’s contribution by giving them a Wikipedia Barnstar
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Barnstars>
See here for more ideas
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Kindness_Campaign#How_to_give_recog…>to
show your appreciation on Wikipedia.
Without your input, Wikimedia projects wouldn’t exist. Thank you! To help
us keep track of how Mini Wiki is being used, please use the #wmuk in your
edit summary, where possible. We’d love to hear from you on your experience
of using Mini Wiki. If you have an idea for a task you would like the UK
community’s help with that is quick and simple, email
rupal.karia(a)wikimedia.org.uk.
