Hi,
Apologies for cross posting!
Just a short email to say hello as the new Wikimedian in Residence at the University of Edinburgh (January 2016 to January 2017) and to make you aware of the editathon session that the University of Edinburgh is running on Tuesday 16th February to Thursday 18th February which Sara Thomas and I are hosting at room LG.07 in the David Hume Tower Building, George Square, Edinburgh, EH8 9JX.
The topic is on the History of Medicine on this occasion. It covers medical terms not currently covered on Wikipedia as well as historic Edinburgh locations which have played a large role in the history of medicine. It also broadens out to cover notable personages in the history of medicine such as the infamous Burke & Hare grave-robbers as well as the intriguing case of James Miranda Barry and continuing our work on those female pioneers of the medical profession such as ‘the Edinburgh 7’ whose stories continue to be under-represented on Wikipedia.
There will be refreshments (inc. free lunch if you wish to edit in the morning and afternoon sessions), guest speakers, online materials to work with, physical materials to work with including, hopefully, the letter written in William Burke’s own blood. We’re also looking for some buildings associated with Edinburgh’s role in the history of medicine to be photographed and uploaded to Wikicommons. You can attend one day or multiple days (or just half a day) if you so desire. Either in person or remotely joining in. It’s open to all. You’d be very welcome.
Full details on how to register are on the event page here:
https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Creating_an_Open_Body_of_Knowledge_editathon_…
The project page for the residency is here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:University_of_Edinburgh
I’d be grateful if you could pass this on to anyone you think maybe interested.
Let me know if you have any questions regarding the event, the residency or about collaborating on any projects.
Very best regards,
Ewan

Subject: Call for Candidates - Affiliate Selected members of the WMF Board
To: Wikimedia Mailing List <wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org
<mailto:wikimedia-l@lists.wikimedia.org>>
Dear Wikimedia friends,
**Call for Nominations - Affiliate Selected Board Seats**
This year the Wikimedia chapters and Thematic Organisations will select
two members of the Wikimedia Foundation Board.
We would like to invite nominations for candidates to be elected to the
WMF board in this process. Please help us by distributing this call for
candidates as widely as possible through such forums as mailing lists,
village pumps, and blogs.
*Role of WMF Board members*
The Wikimedia Foundation board provide governance and strategic
oversight of the WMF. The role of Wikimedia Foundation board members is
set out in detail here: https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Board_member
Successful candidates will bring expertise and understanding to help the
Board further its goals and ability to work effectively at a strategic
and governance level. The work of the Board is conducted in English
(though fluency in additional languages is an advantage) and the role
involves a significant commitment, including travel to several in-person
meetings in California or worldwide.
*Nominations and selection process*
Nominations should be posted using this form on Meta-Wiki:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Affiliate-selected_Board_seats/2016/Nominat…
If you need assistance completing the wiki-template, please contact one
of the election facilitators who will be happy to assist.
Nominations are open until the end of 8 March 2016 (midnight UTC). To be
entered into the ballot, a candidate's nomination must be accompanied by
a statement of support from a Chapter or Thematic Organisation, which
may accompany the nomination or be received no later than 22 March 2016.
The timeline for the selection process can be seen here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Affiliate-selected_Board_seats/2016
There is also a selection FAQ here:

Many thanks,

Dear all,
Registration is now open for the OER16 Open Culture Conference
<https://oer16.oerconf.org/> at the University of Edinburgh, and an ‘early
bird’ discount is available until 6 March. I'm circulating the news as
we're collaborating with the University of Edinburgh and were encouraged to
promote the event.
The early bird rate is £250 for the full 2 day conference including the
Gala Dinner on Tuesday, 19 April. Limited places for one day attendance are
available, although we encourage delegates to register for the full event
whenever possible. Single day attendance does not include the Gala Dinner
and costs £160. No early bird discount is available for single days.
OER16 will take place on 19th & 20th April 2016 at the University of
Edinburgh. The conference will be chaired by Melissa Highton, Director of
Learning, Teaching and Web Services at the University of Edinburgh, and
Lorna Campbell, OER Liaison at the University of Edinburgh and EDINA
Digital Education Manager.
OER16 will focus on:
• The strategic advantage of open and creating a culture of openness.
• Converging and competing cultures of open knowledge, open source, open
content, open practice, open data and open access.
• Hacking, making and sharing.
• The reputational challenges of openwashing.
• Openness and public engagement.
• Innovative approaches to opening up cultural heritage collections for
education.
Keynotes speakers are Catherine Cronin, Jim Groom, Melissa Highton, John
Scally and Emma Smith.
