Any suggestions of interesting article histories for a comedic talk?
by Michael Peel 06 Mar '12

06 Mar '12

Hi all, I'm doing a comedy-science talk on Wikipedia with the theme of 'histories' at a [[Bright Club]] Manchester early next month. My current plan (which is still subject to change) is that I'll talk about the histories of Wikipedia articles, and show some interesting/amusing changes made to articles. An example would be this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Guantanamo_Bay_Naval_Base&diff=14… which was a change purported to be made by the FBI back in 2005: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:64.165.110.114 If you know of any interesting diffs/article histories that could make people laugh, then please could you send me some pointers to them (preferably offlist)? Thanks, Mike

Fwd: [Foundation-l] Chapter Selected Board Seats - Time for questions
by Michael Peel 02 Mar '12

02 Mar '12

Hi all, For those that don't know already: the Wikimedia chapters are currently in the process of nominating two people for the chapter-selected WMF board seats. The background and timeline for this is at: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Chapter-selected_Board_seats The list of candidates is public on meta, and there's the opportunity to ask the candidates questions there: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Chapter-selected_Board_seats/Candidates http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Chapter-selected_Board_seats/2012/Candidates… I would encourage everyone to take a look at the candidate statements, ask questions that you think are important and will lead to extra insight into the candidates, and to let the WMUK board know (confidentially - email comments to me, or your trustee of choice) what you think of the candidates, and which ones you think would be most suited for being a WMF trustee. Thanks, Mike Begin forwarded message: > From: Béria Lima <berialima(a)gmail.com> > Subject: [Foundation-l] Chapter Selected Board Seats - Time for questions > Date: 2 March 2012 02:27:16 GMT > To: Wikimedia Foundation Mailing List <foundation-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org> > Reply-To: Wikimedia Foundation Mailing List <foundation-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org> > > Hello people, > > So after receive authorization from all candidates, the list of candidates > + statements are in meta, and you can find it here: http':// > meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Chapter-selected_Board_seats/2012/Candidates > > Until 14 March is time for questions, so if you have any questions to any > of the candidates, please put your question in this page: > http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Chapter-selected_Board_seats/2012/Candidates… > are already some questions and some answers there) > > So there is only one thing. Geonotices
by HJ Mitchell 02 Mar '12

02 Mar '12

Hi all, I'd be grateful if any enwiki admins could add themselves to the list at the bottom of http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/Events/Geonotices. Geonotices for some events have been a bit hap hazard lately, with some going up at very short notice. I don't think every event or meetup needs a geonotice, but I'm hoping to use that page to track our use of them and to provide somewhere for folks to make uncontroversial requests for one that will hopefully get a faster response than the existing mechanisms on enwiki, as well as a list of admins who can be bugged for urgent requests. Don't worry, it doesn't involve anything too much like work - if anyone organises an event they want to bring to the attention of the wider WP community, they can list it there, and somebody will hopefully sort it. Cheers, Harry (PS, if there are any enwiki admins who don't know how to put up a geonotice, just copy and paste from this diff and change the message to the message you want, the start date to the current date and time, and the end date to the day of the event!)

Editathon at the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum, Coventry, 31 March
by HJ Mitchell 01 Mar '12

01 Mar '12

An editathon focusing on the history of Coventry (which, contrary to popular opinion, is actually quite diverse and rather interesting!) is being held at the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum in Coventry on Saturday 31 March as part of an ongoing and already successful relationship with the Herbert. Museum staff will be on hand to assist, and useful source material will be available, with more in the on-site History Centre, available on request. Of particular interest are the subjects of a collection of watercolours of historic buildings ad monuments in the city, which will be on display in a special exhibition at the time of the event. We are, however, limited to 15 attendees, so if you're interested and able to get to Coventry on the 31st, please do sign up. Full details are at http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/Coventry_History_Editathon, but if you have any questions, please do ask me! I hope to see some of you there! Sincerely, Harry Mitchell (User:HJ Mitchell)
