Hello Folks!

There was an IRC meeting yesterday at the #Kiwix channel on freenode whose major agenda was the way forward with getting our customized Kenyan ZIM file compiled and availed for download. In attendance from our chapter was Deonte and Oscar (though briefly). I will summarize the results of the meeting and if I miss out on anything, Dennis you welcome to point that out.

It would not be possible to successfully "add" the Kenyan articles to the existent UK based ZIM file for the fact that the indexing system used doesn't allow that and there would be no interwikilinks between the "old" ZIM articles and the added Kenyan articles.(This was my former understanding of this project)

After we present our list, the Developers will merge it with the UK list of articles that was used to create the UK based ZIM then they will create a huge HTML file which we will review to ensure there is nothing shocking for the children before they go ahead to avail the new ZIM.

It was also cited that the requested articles to be added are supposed to be submitted in a txt file and not the format that we had been using on meta at [1].

Hello Folks!

In pursuant of the subject of this thread, I have been exchanging
Emails with Emmanuel who will be assisting us to compile a new ZIM
based on list at [1].

What I have garnered so far is that we overlooked the
technicalities surrounding the addition and removal of articles
from
an existent ZIM file. His request is to have a list of articles
that
we want in a new ZIM rather than a revision of the UK based ZIM.
Read his reply below though I think his mail was not under cc-by-sa
;)

I think what you want to do is not so simple for many technical
reasons.
For example, I assume I will have to re-render all articles (old
and
new), otherwise we won't have all links between old and new
article
working. If I do that, the indexes links to the articles won't
work
anymore... I do not have the same naming nomenclature probably
than the
UK team.

And that brings me to the question. What next?

If/when the list is completely done, we'll proceed with
creating an updated ZIM file, and then we can think about
ways to distribute the Kenyan Offline Wikipedia.

Hello Nice people,

It is really reassuring when you receive that phone
call from someone with thirst for free knowledge
which is the main mission of Wikimedia.

One teacher from a school that benefited from the
Wikipedia for Schools pilot that was accomplished
in
Mombasa, Kenya, gave a call to Bruce (Member of
WMKE) and she requested for a copy of the DVD plus
the manual of how to make the offline package
functional. She had misplaced the copy we left
after
the pilot and she would like a new copy to install
in new computers that the school acquired recently.

It is very satisfying to learn that someone found
the package useful. I will be sending her a copy
during the week plus a manual via a courier service
since she availed the school’s mailing address.

At this point, I think it is wise for her school to
partake in the story telling tour that will be
executed by Victor Grigas who will be visiting
Kenya
after Wikimania.

Stephen.

PS: Dennis, How far have you reached with the

Thanks for this update, Stephen.

I'd like to encourage you guys to make progress
on this work, so we can finally prepare a new
ZIM file (we'll figure out the size problem if
we have too.  Probably by removing a few
pictures.) and start working on distribution.

Are you and Deonte the only ones working on

more other articles into our new custom

we request to be added will come with its new
blue links which means more articles than
what
we already have in our not yet completed
compilation of topics. This blue links mean
more articles!

As of now there are 500+ requested additions
on [1] and if I do some maths by assuming
that
each new requested article has a minimum of
10
blue links then we are talking about 5000+
articles being added onto the SOS version of
off-line WIkipedia. NOTE that the list is

still a Work-In-Progress with more subjects
to
be added!

The SOS version of the offline Wikipedia is
5500 articles which means that our new
additions would not fit as an addition to the
SOS version and still be <4gb. I met Deonte
today and he requested for some pages of the
Agriculture syllabus which he is working on
right now. I still have the Business
Education
syllabus and the C.R.E. syllabus which I
secured last week.

Hi, Stephen and everyone.

Hello!
Emmanuel requested for an online meet - up via free node tomorrow so that we can discuss the way forward with the offline content development. Time is 7pm GMT (900pm Local time)
Go to: webchat.freenode.net
Channel: #kiwix

Is there a log or minutes of that meeting?  What was agreed?

I think the idea in collecting the "diff" against the UK version was not that those articles will be added to _an existing ZIM file_, but that a _new ZIM file_ will be generated (as Emmanuel notes, it's the only way), based on the UK _list_ plus (i.e. union-with) your list.
