Hi guys,

Firstly, let me apologize for the typos that have been made in the previous thread:

1. Sam: it's Asaf, not Asav.
2. David: it's Delphine, not Delphone (BTW, you can also call her ''notafish'' :-))

Anyway, I will not be able to avail myself for a meetup this weekend since I'll be in Mombasa and for the following week as well since I'll be out of the country. But you guys can meet nonetheless and I don't think I'll have a problem catching up.

Cheers,
Abbas.

Subject: Re: [Wikimedia Kenya] Preparing for the Chapter Meeting in Berlin

Hi Asav,
Thanks for the great advice that you are offering us. Oscar, Abbas, it is up to you now to follow that.
We should have a physical meeting as we arrange for this meeting before Oscar and Abbas depart, so that we can prepare that brief talk, organise them and give them moral support and cultivate confidence in them. I have no doubt this is going to be our second major break-through after Project launch at Strathmore University.
Thanks Asav and the entire international team for your moral support to us

Hello, everyone.

I'd like to congratulate you on your mature and efficient selection process.  (It took us a lot longer in Wikimedia Israel, for instance...)

To those who wanted to go but are not going this time, remember there will be other opportunities to meet and exchange views and experiences with your international peers, in this year and in coming years: Delphine already mentioned Wikimania at Haifa (early August), which is a _great_ opportunity to meet lots of Wikimedians from around the world, without the 2-per-chapter limit.  There are also some smaller, more specific events planned, such as a developer conference.

Regarding preparation for the chapters conference:

1. Be sure to prepare a *very brief* status report.  No more than *three minutes*, summing up your status -- the event at Strathmore, and the school outreach project should be your focus, and just make a very quick mention of the bylaws situation at the end.  This report would be delivered before all the participants, and is *key* to get your international peers interested in the work you've been doing. Following this talk, some of these peers would no doubt want to discuss your work with you, offer help, make suggestions, etc.

2. Beside the brief status report, try to come up with a couple of "big questions" you are thinking about, especially things you would like to learn from the more experienced, established chapters.  Use these prepared questions to initiate conversation with the other participants, and take notes.  (If you can arrange to come with at least one mobile computer, it would help you take notes and follow up links to sites mentioned during the conference -- there's wi-fi throughout.  If you won't have a laptop with you, let me know and I'll try to arrange one for you.)

Most importantly: don't be shy!  Make the most of that weekend by engaging with as many different people around you.  There are a couple of natural tendencies to overcome here: one is the tendency to stick with people you already know -- this applies both to each delegation's representatives sticking to each other, and to experienced Wikimedians sticking to people they have already met in previous conferences or Wikimanias.  The other is to keep talking to one or two persons you've had a good conversation with, staying in the "comfort zone", rather than looking for new contacts.  So don't be shy! :)

Keep up the great teamwork, everyone!  I am inspired by your progress.
