Dear Nee,

Thank you so much for appreciation.

if we tie up with some of these not for profit entities to tap into their recordings and make them available on the wikiproject platform. This will not only save the energies of community members in creating new audio articles but will also provide the CR stations and the rural communities they target a virtual space and also expand the wiki-India community.

Community Radio suggestion is brilliant,

Today we hosted first ever workshop and people from 13 different languages contributed to pilot project.
P.S : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Club_Pune/Spoken_Wikipedia_Workshops

We are in touch with radio agencies which can air/distribute articles for free of cost.

Also we are targeting NGO's working for visually impaired people - so we can manually circulate articles to share knowledge with disabled people.

There are many aspects before launching, we are just learning from Pilot projects.

Keep Suggesting, Keep Inspiring!

Hi Abhishek,

It is a novel effort. Wish the event a big success.

One suggestion.

As many on the list may have heard about the growth of Community Radio in India. Probably it would be ideal if we tie up with some of these not for profit entities to tap into their recordings and make them available on the wikiproject platform. This will not only save the energies of community members in creating new audio articles but will also provide the CR stations and the rural communities they target a virtual space and also expand the wiki-India community.

I would be more than happy to take a lead on this if the community finds it worthy.

Best

I think this is a pretty good idea. Already, the stations have the need to deliver 6 month's recordings to the relevant Ministry, as part of the t&c of their licenses. We need to establish a 'chain' to each station, whereby an additional copy (presently, the stipulation mentions a cd or DVD) can be made for wikipedia.

Actually, I see scope for a very big step forward, where the content is put up on wikipedia every month, for instance, or even at shorter intervals, and the Ministry be sent the links. This will considerably reduce the 'unofficial' pressure on the stations created by the need for monitoring content (presumably to prevent misuse; in reality, such misuse is inherent in the way that licenses are disbursed, but that is a topic for a different list).

What I am suggesting, therefore, is cooperation from Wikimedia to make the content of cr stations available online as a practice. The stations would love it, because it will give them huge leverage in being able to get the Ministry off their backs. If the Chapter can get involved, and a framework established to make this online content available regularly at no cost to the stations (which work hand-to-mouth, the genuine ones, I mean) I think it will be a win-win situation.

Even without making it a systemic practice, a lot can be done with individual stations, and in any case it is only respectful to approach each station that way. Still, I am pretty sure the existing cr bodies (there are two) will find this suggestion very welcome, and will put their weight behind getting a system in place.

Subject: [Wikimediaindia-l] Proposal for India's First MediaWiki Group Ahmedabad
Dear friends,

This is to inform you all about the creation of the first MediaWiki group in India. For the past several days, I’ve been speaking to Quim Gil, Sumana and Yuvi Panda. I was informed about the setting up of local groups in different countries for technical contributors. With encouragement from all of them and with help from Noopur I submitted a proposal for the formation of MediaWiki Group Ahmedabad. This proposal has been endorsed by 7 people so far.

For those who might be interested in setting up similar groups, I think a Wikitech mailing list for India is being set up and personally, I would be happy to help you write a proposal for your community. I think it’s a great idea because with the help of this technical group we intend to make good technical infrastructure and editing environment for Gujarati Wikipedia easier to contribute to.

I have already ported HotCat and Popups(on the way) on Gujarati Wikipedia. Please have a look at the areas we want to collaborate on:

Areas of collaboration:
  • Localize Gadgets for Gujarati Wikipedia and Wikisource
  • Create New Gadgets and extensions
  • Bug solving for Gujarati Wikipedia and WikiSource and also other MediaWiki related Bug solving for all Indian languages
  • Translate into Gujarati Language, i.e http://translatewiki.net/
  • Wikidata

You can read the proposal here: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Groups/Proposals/Ahmedabad

Your endorsements, improvements and feedback are welcome at the wiki
page. Thank you!
