Thanks Ansuman. There are several tasks if you or some one else wants to help out.
1. Creating a project page in the chapter wiki and recruiting volunteers who edit in different language wikis.
2. People with expertise in putting up geo-targetted banners (for fundraisers and Wikiconference) can create banners for our purpose.
3. Banner design is a task. For an Indian user, for the first time, we should show a drop down to the user asking them if they'd like to specify the language wiki (Odiya, Tamil etc.) they'd be interested in reading. This preference should be stored against their profile. After that, when their reading an English Wiki article, if there is an interwiki link to the language chosen, we show a banner in the chosen language saying something like "Bangla Wikipedia has an article on Saket. Please go to IWLink to read and help improve the article."

Of course the above flow can be refined. Since Srikanth has had an idea to implement something along these lines, he can give a detailed specification. Also, if any mediawiki hacking needs to be done for that, we can do that during the upcoming hackathon.

Thank you for the interest, Srikanth. Hope someone's able to do something along these lines (yes, "suitable" interwiki link surfaced in a banner will do) during the hackathon. Topical cues can be taken up later, but we should pluck the low-hanging fruits first. :)

Hi all,

[Apologies if a similar thing has been proposed earlier, I haven't been able to read much of the recent discussions.]

I had a thought of channelling readers and editors of English Wikipedia (and similar projects) to other Indian language wikis based on their IP addresses and the topic being read. I've put down the proposal at http://strategy.wikimedia.org/wiki/Proposal:Funneling_multilingual_readers_and_editors_based_on_geographic_and_topical_cues as it is applicable elsewhere too than just India. Please read and discuss the proposal. It'll be great if some of us can take the lead and do a pilot with two or three Wikis. Personally, I'll not be able to commit much time these days, but can support if somebody takes the lead. I suggest that we can put up a project page (specific to Indian wikis) at http://wiki.wikimedia.in/Projects:2011-12 if there is enough support

Good idea Sundar. I have something in mind just to bring in interwiki links on sitenotice banner dynamically, so we can run a "dynamic" campaign. Geo-based banners would be good. Am not sure how easy would it be to include categories into the picture. But one more thing to work at India Hackathon. Thanks!
