Clearly, we must start giving copyright credit to scanner operators. Or, a la Gutenberg, to scanner owners. And a new can of worms for every inkjet printer.

Very much! A picture of the Mona Lisa is copyrightable. Even if the
painting of the Mona Lisa is out of copyright.
