Thanks Sundar and Logic, I was hoping to send a more informal intro here :) To give you guys more details, I will be working with the foundation l10n engineering team[1] four days a week as a user experience designer. During my 6 month contract, I will be required to look into usability issues and design a more user friendly interface for language tools, which are currently not very simple to use for a complete newbie.

The Goal: Lower the entry barrier for non-english speakers to start using and contributing to wikimedia projects.

Since work for the foundation is essentially public work and has an impact on all of us, everyone is requested to keep track of our progress and give feedback on our outputs to make it better. I'm still trying to figure out what the best communication medium with everyone is, I think these lists are too noisy and is ignored by a good bunch of people (including me). If anyone has better ideas on what would be an appropriate channel to get feedback on our outputs, please suggest.

You can track our work and progress in the following ways:
1) Current sprint progress and tasks [2]
2) Monthly updates and milestones [3]
2) Sprint demos every 2nd tuesday at 2030 IST (Next: May 15) [4]
3) Localisation team IRC office hours every 3rd wednesday of the month [5]

Logic is a regular at these events, and it would be great to see more faces turn up and see the work behind the scenes to make wikipedia better. Its also a great opportunity for those wanting to get involved in mediawiki development to interact with some awesome coders and help you get started.

For my work, I will be needing a small group of indic language wikipedians who are not familiar with English to get feedback on designs. I'm going to rely on Logic for helping me out on this, if you can read this mail and you know someone else, you can let srikanth know. I'll collect the names from him later (thanks srikanth :))

I will probably not be posting anything technical here again. I think the best is to have a wiki page and keep discussions/feedback there. I will announce that system shortly.
Cheers,
Arun

Hi everyone,
I wanted to introduce myself to the community and the WMF team, I'm Arun
Ganesh (user:planemad)[1a] from Bangalore, India and have joined as
contractor for the foundation's L10n team[1b] as an Interaction designer
along with Pau to improve the user experience of language tools and
features.

I have been a longtime contributer to both commons[2] and the
openstreetmap[3] project and got involved with foundation work during the
Mumbai and Pune hackathons recently[4][5][6] where I proposed some of the
first ideas for the Universal Language Selector widget with Brandon, with
which we want to make language selection for anyone easy peasy.

Apart from that, I love cartography and maps [7], which would explain my
map contributions and the occasional headline for wikipedia [8], use only
public transport[9] and traveling with my pocket camera[10].

Its feels great to have this opportunity to work more seriously on a
project which has been an important part of my life. I'm new here, I wont
claim to know much, but I hope to make a difference in whichever way
possible. I also look forward to interacting more closely and learning from
the rest of the designers - Brandon, Heather and Pau to do the wonderful
things that designers like to do .So keep the usability bugs coming :)
-Arun
