Subject: [Wikipedia Library] Help us keep #1lib1ref energized through
January 23!
To: Wikimedia & Libraries <libraries(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hi Wikimedians!
The Wikipedia Library is really excited about the #1lib1ref campaign taking
off -- we seem to have found a concept that will excite the global
libraries community to talk more with us, about our common mission: helping
the world get access to reliable knowledge.
Please explore the hashtag on Twitter and other social media: we have
several dozen websites, library organizations, and individuals blog and
reflect on their experience. For example:
https://twitter.com/search?q=%231Lib1Ref . I have included a preview of
some of our tracking below for a sense of our scale.
Please use the campaign to promote the exciting GLAM, research, and
Wikimedia community projects you think librarians would be interested in.
We still need your help:
-
Keep sharing and emphasizing the hashtag #1lib1ref. Try to pair your
posts with #Wikipedia15 when you can.
-
Help translate the main page of the campaign into more languages:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Wikipedia_Library/1Lib1Ref
-
Note: We use some of the headers and sentences in this page, to
generate multilingual social media posts.
-
The campaign technically starts on Friday, but we need to continuously
remind the global libraries community that they a) can start adding
references now, and b) should continue adding references all next week. Oh,
and its not just librarians who are adding references for the campaign --
that's just our target audience :)
-
Publish blogposts talking about Wikmedia’s opportunities with libraries.
Here are a small sample blog posts that might help inspire your work:
-
From our Italian Colleagues :
http://librarianscape.com/2016/01/09/wikipedia-un-posto-per-bibliotecari/
-
From DLF: https://www.diglib.org/archives/11060/
-
From our Catalan colleagues:
http://blogcrai.ub.edu/2016/01/13/el-crai-de-la-universitat-de-barcelona-sa…
-
Reach out to the librarians using the hashtag: some of them are even
hosting lunch gatherings, or small editing events that engage library
staffs. These librarians are potential leaders for local events and
GLAM-Wiki activities.
If successful, we hope to run a similar campaign next year, with more
direction and leadership from a volunteer committee (this year we decided
to move quick, and test the concept alongside #Wikipedia15 ). If you are
interested in helping organize, let us know at
wikipedialibrary(a)wikimedia.org .
Give feedback on the campaign and resources that would be helpful for next
years campaign on the talk page on meta :
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Wikipedia_Library/1Lib1Ref
Thank you so much for those who have already stepped up to lead on social
media and translating the meta page!
Alex Stinson
Project Manager
The Wikipedia Library
What impact are we seeing?
We are tracking several different elements of this campaign:
-
Usage of the hashtag in social media -- over 600 tweets have used the
hashtag since January 4. We are also tracking the hashtag on facebook and
linkedin -- both of which are major networks for librarians.
-
Our facebook event is beginning to spread -
https://www.facebook.com/events/975178119187954/ -- please invite more
people from your library networks
-
Page views - we are seeing between 400-600 pageviews, with nearly 7000
views in the last month on the English Version of the campaign page, and
Italian, French and Spanish are seeing 40-60 views a day. Moreover,
Catalans page, which is on ca.wikipedia, has seen over 2000 visits in the
last month:
http://stats.grok.se/ca/latest/Viquiprojecte:Bibliowikis/1Lib1Ref
-
We are beginning to see hashtag used on English Wikipedia’s edit
summaries http://tools.wmflabs.org/hashtags/search/1lib1ref . Based on
other social media discussions, we think this represents <60% of the
activity so far.
-
We are working with Stephen LaPorte to help the tool support top 20
language Wikipedias, and Wikipedias like Romanian where we know community
members are sharing the campaign. Let us know if you don’t think your
language will be in that group.
-
A new phabricator item has been -- it would be incredibly useful for
other kinds of campaigns: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T123529 .
Please leave feedback and use cases.

Hello,
Centre for Internet and Society’s Access To Knowledge (CIS-A2K) program
would like to share with you the newsletter below for the month of December
2015. We look forward to hear any feedback or input you might have.
As per the 2007 census of India, there are about 7.4 million speakers who
speak Konkani as a native language. Many might not know though the language
finally made a late entry on Wikipedia in 2014 with the release of the Goan
Konkani Wikipedia (https://gom.wikipedia.org). Since the beginning of the
project as an Incubator project, it has faced several issues; complications
because of the multiple scripts used to write Konkani, building a community
from scratch (
http://www.dnaindia.com/blogs/post-konkani-wikipedia-climbing-up-the-indian…
to contribute to the Wikipedia project, and finding encyclopedic resources
to grow content. The Konkani community that contributes on Wikipedia is
predominantly present in Goa with a few contributors living elsewhere. The
statistical analysis of the last six months shows several trends of the
project and community growth. There is an overall state of both the content
and community seem to be stable with a total of 124 editors and 2400
articles. However, the growth trends are little worrying as there is hardly
any new editors that has joined the community in last six months. The
active editors (with more than 5 edits a month) have also slowed down over
time with a few them becoming inactive as the average of the number of
active editors for the previous six months (January-June 2015) was 18 that
has come down alarming to 5. Same is the case of very active editors (with
more than 100 edits a month) and number of new articles being created every
month. These downtrends are more of a result of the on-wiki, online and
offline activities slowing down. There is a great need for more leadership
and community-led activities that could be catalyzed by organizational
support.

• Indic Wikipedia policies and guidelines handbook:
Currently CIS-A2K is working with five Indian-language Wikimedia
communities (Kannada, Konkani, Marathi, Odia and Telugu). While working
with the mentioned Indic Wikimedia communities, we observed a number of
issues affecting them and we also noticed that there are many similarities
between the issues and difficulties faced by these communities. So, we
decided to start working a help document "Indic Wikipedia Policies and
Guidelines Handbook".
At first, we created a short handbook discussing a number of topics, such
as how to create new policies, or modify the existing ones, using village
pump, enforcing policies etc. Then we talked to Indic Wikipedians to know
more about the policies and guidelines-related issues and problems they are
facing. We also asked to give their feedback on the first draft of this
handbook.
The handbook is now released now and may be seen here (

Hi,
On 09th January 2016, WMIN, on behalf of Global Tamil Wikimedia Community,
signed an MoU with Tamil Virtual Academy, Chennai.
We will collaborate with or seek support from Tamil Virtual Academy under
various domains including and starting with the following:
- Policy initiatives for adoption of free content licenses in public
institutions
- Infrastructure support
- Capacity building programs
- Digitization of Galleries, Archives, Museums, Libraries in Tamil Nadu
- Access to information for writing Wikipedia articles
- Wikipedia content improvement
- Outreach
- Wikipedia in Education
Global Tamil Wikimedia Community approved this collaboration with
unananimous support. Full text of this MoU <https://ta.wikipedia.org/s/4o7x>
can be seen here.
*Tamil Virtual Academy* (TVA) is a high-profile
<http://tamilvu.org/tvateam/html/board_membersen.htm> autonomous
institution established by the Government of Tamil Nadu under its
Information Technology Department. TVA aims at providing Internet-based
resources and opportunities for the Tamil communities living in different
parts of the globe as well as others interested in learning Tamil, Science,
Technology, Tamil Computing software and acquiring knowledge of the
history, art, literature and culture of the Tamils and to identify,
establish, maintain and promote the solutions for the Tamil computing
requirements of Tamil Diaspora, Government, Educational, Media and Business
institution.
We believe that collaborations like these will help us set the precedent to
engage in free content advocacy works in other parts of the country.
Thanks,
Ravi
Hi,
The Government of Tamil Nadu has declared all books that have been
nationalized so far and all books that will be nationalized in future will
be released under CC0 1.0 Universal (CC0 1.0) Public Domain Dedication
license <https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/>, when their
copyright has not already expired according to Indian Copyright Act, 1957
and Indian Copyright Rules, 1958.
Nationalization of books written by eminent people who have worked for the
development of Tamil language and society is a pioneering scheme by Tamil
Nadu Government where copyright is acquired following due procedure and the
books are declared nationalized for public usage.
The Government of Tamil Nadu first acquired rights for the works of
Poet Subramania
Bharathi <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subramania_Bharati> in 1949 and
announced his works as nationalized in 1963. Since then it has nationalized
2000+ works written by 100+ authors.
In order to make these books fully available for public usage globally, it
is essential that these books are available under a free content license.
An official letter announcing this can be seen at
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tamil-Nadu-Nationalized-Books-Publi…
This announcement was made possible owing to the collaboration between
Tamil Virtual Academy, Global Tamil Wikimedia Community and Wikimedia India.
Thanks,
Ravi
