*The repot
Odia Wiki caught in a lime warp
*
Express News Service Bhubaneswar, April 3
Wikimedia Foundation's Indian chap¬ter started Odia Wiki in 2002 but it has
just 10 contributors. Odia Wiki, one of the first in regional languages in
In¬dia, started with a repository of just 200 articles but the number has
not changed much in the last nine
years.
All the dated articles have been deleted by Wikipedia administrators.
Besides the contributors to Wiki have so far been technology professionals
and tech-savvy youngsters, most of whom live outside the State. In order to
take the Wikipedia project forward, Odia Wiki activists are now looking for
support and explore initiatives in the State. To get more contributors to
Odia Wiki, they are holding workshops and meetings in many districts and one
such workshop was organised today at Bharatiya Vidya Bhawan here.Wikipedia,
the volunteer driven, web-based multilingual encyclopaedia project, has
emerged as an important reference source on the Internet for all kinds of
information.
"Though Odia Wiki was one of the first regional languages Wiki to be
launched by the Indian chapter of Wikipedia along with four other Indian
languages, it is lagging behind the rest three. There is no awareness
Contributors to Wiki have so far been technology professionals and
tech-savvy youngsters, most of whom live outside the State
at all," said Subhashish Panigrahi, an engineer and an active member of the
Odia Wiki community. Malayalam Wikimedians are leading the movement in India
with a repository of more than 20,000 articles. Even the take-off of Odia Wi
ki was slow - it took two years to reach the 100-article mark. However, the
silver lining is the formulation of a Unicode standard for Oriya that will
help interested contributors to type easily in Oriya while entering data in
Wikipedia. It was a luxury till recently. The workshop is aimed at roping in
more active Wiki contributors. Divided into two sessions, the participants
were first familiarised with Wikipe¬dia, Odia Wiki and the various Wiki
projects. The second session was meant to prepare them technically to be
con¬tributors. A booklet comprising fre¬quently asked questions was also
is¬sued to the participants.
Similar workshops have been planned in Cuttack, Balasore and Ganjam this
month. People from various walks of life, including students, tech¬nology
professionals, academics and retired officials attended today's sessions.

Heya again.
I thought of this idea today. I figured it might help.
How about we [on a regular basis], list out our major contributions on
various Wikimedia projects on a periodic basis?
The advantages of this stupidity are:
* Editors might find someone else who edits articles of similar nature and
this will lead to more collaboration and team work.
* People can get feedback on their edits and can help other users improve OR
improve themselves.
* This results in cross-editing, the overall quality of articles will go up.
Examples are:
* I edit something related to a certain National Highway. Users like
Naveenpf or SBC-YPR might have some photographs or references, and might add
it.
* I create an article in Hindi, somebody sees it and translates it to Tamil.
Advantages are aplenty, do let me know what you think of this.

hi,
This appeared in a few news outlets -

but I found it only today. It is interesting to see such magazines being
brought back. Google Books does this with Popular Mechanics from the 1950s
and it's nice to see it happening to Indian publications as well. Can these
be bought onto Wikisource or some similar platforms?

Heya,
Sorry for the slew of messages.
Huggle is an application for dealing with vandalism, written in .NET.
Huggle is currently available in a bunch of languages, for language specific
wikis, none of which are Indian.
Huggle is currently being translated into THREE Indian languages: Hindi [by
ME], Marathi [by User:vaibhavskulkarni] and Kannada [NO Idea who, page
exists].
Translations can be done here :
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Huggle/Localization
Please do join in and contribute.
One are of notice is in the warnings and notices, which I believe larger
ones like Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi can do. You need to copy the
warning TEMPLATE and paste it there.
Please join in the initiative as there is a LOT of vandalism on local
wikipedia which goes unnoticed.

Heya guys,
I just wanted to bring up a few questions and other things.
At a meetup Last year [January 2010, Bangalore], a few guys from Google had
showcased their Translator Toolkit.
I wanted to know how many people use this. This tool, while it might seems
useless to some, actually is essential in many ways.
While it might seem useless, going by the fact that it doesn't give good
translations, or even transliteration, [it used to show Poeeying for Boeing,
in Roman script for translation to Tamil], it is a community based system.
The more contributed, the more it helps. Google's translation website
currently supports only Hindi among Indian languages, and the more
contributions are made [collectively], the better for the community.
Apart from this, I wanted to bring up some more points.
In October 2010, Mani Pande had asked for a survey about editing from Mobile
phones.
I believe http://quillpadmobile.in is handy as it helps in typing in Hindi
on Mobile Phones.
If anybody uses it, please do reply here.

: Verrry funny !!!! Thanks and compliments to you , mother India !!!,
your 21st century verry very well informed law minister is making you
and us feel so proud !! Think mother India, think again, think to change
this wrong Indian democracy, where people have been voting anonymously,
no education qualification or background needed for voting
and even no qualification and background needed for getting elected.Hope
your fresh generations in the law ministry change all that for better !
:All our best wishes to the incumbent Law Minister in getting chance to
choose best chief justices for India and best wishes for his career to
grow into foreign minister of India, a chief justice of India, chief
justice of International court President of India and last but not least
to become chief of United Nations
@Oh those all who gave Vaidic Sutras in ancient India -wherever you
are, its good you credited all your work to God and did not do anonymous
writing otherwise Independent India's law ministry would have been
pretty unhappy with you !!!
@Respected Rabindranath Tagoreji Wherever you are , The best thing ever
did for yourself is you did not write following poem anonymously
otherwise Law Ministry Independent India would not have been pleased
with you
Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high;
Where
knowledge is free;
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments
by narrow domestic walls;
Where words come out from the depth of truth;
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection:
Where
the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert
sand of dead habit;
Where the mind is lead forward by thee into
ever-widening thought and action—Into that heaven of freedom,
my Father,
let my country awake.
My Father, please please please, let my ... honorable Ministers and Ministries awake !!!
Hi Team,
Wish you a very happy Odisha Dibasa, this auspicious day remebers us the the
foundation day of Odisha on 1 April 1936. Odia Wikipedia reaches 699
articles, the 700th article will be on this very special day.
Here <http://translatewiki.net/wiki/Special:LanguageStats/or>is the link of
all the translated Wiki messages, it is just started, still way to go.
Thanks to Sambi Ra for his support for those of my confusing moments to find
the appropriate messages.
The homepage is recreated and gone through several modifications to make it
error free.
Most of the Categories are created and many are still to be created and all
the articles are to be inter linked and Srikant has done a really good job
of creating most of the important Templates.
We have organized the 1st Odia Wikipedia

Bengaluru and organizing the 2nd
Odia Wikipedia Academy
<http://or.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wiki_workshop/Bhubaneswar1>on

Does it mean that Wikipedia tracks (is able to track) what other URL's
were open (s.a. in other tabs) while Wikipedia was being browsed ?
Or are they tracking somehow using OpenID, or other shared
user-authentication / SSO tokens etc. ?
And what the heck does the ICERT intend to do with this information...
without a context, looks like a very unusual (stopping short of
calling it "wierd") thing to ask for !
