Dear all,
A group of us here in Bangalore have been arranging GLAM sessions on Feb
18/19.
NGMA (the National Gallery of Modern Art, Bangalore:
http://ngmaindia.gov.in/ngma_bangaluru.asp) will host a semi-public
discussion with Liam, NGMA staff, and invited curators/ art gallery
owners at their premises on Feb 18, Friday, 3 pm in the NGMA staff
boardroom. The other organisations invited are: 1 Shanthi Road
(http://www.1shanthiroad.com/), Gallery SKE (www.galleryske.com), Colab
(an art and architecture curatorial concern) and pad.ma (www.pad.ma).
Wikipedians and other interested folk from Bangalore are welcome to
join, but since space is slightly limited, NGMA would prefer to keep
this a private event (without press) and ask that you send in your names
beforehand. Therefore, if you are interested in this event, could you
please add your names here:
http://wikimedia.in/wiki/Projects:GLAM_2011/Bangalore_Feb2011#18-Feb
Will update http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:GLAM/India after the
event.
There are many other events in the planning, and there will be more
notifications here as these events are finalised.
Cheers,
Achal

Hi,
I have mentioned to
Bishaka, Vivek and Pradeep in person and on the Mumbai list. After our first Mumbai Photowalk, I ran a quick
check on Flickr for Mumbai related content and found a lot of relevant
and professional photographs. I contacted relevant uploaders requesting
them to change licensing to CC-BY or CC-BY-SA so that to allow use on
Wikipedia.
A lot of them agreed - for example, I got pictures of an IPL match at
Brabourne Stadium, several photographs of Ganpati Visarjan at Girgaum
Chowpatty (taken from a boat by a visiting foreigner who kindly agreed
to change licensing) - they include wonderful picutures of the beach
full of people and idols, coast guard choppers patrolling etc., Ballard
Bunder Gatehouse, an ATP tournament that took place in Mumbai at CCI in
2006, Agatti and Delhi airports (aerial view) and Mani Bhavan pictures
so far. During the photowalks we would have taken a lot of time to cover
so much - and may not have been as professional.
Further past sports events is something we could not have got for
obvious reasons and I doubt we could have got as good pictures of Ganesh
Visarjan (even if we waited a few more months ourselves). Out of about
15 people contacted about 7 people have agreed to change the licensing
(only 1 refusal thus far). A lot of the amateur photographers on Flickr
might be willing to let go of the copyright so as to get more exposure
and notice through Wikipedia (they may even pass the word that their
photographs have been requested for use by Wikipedians and are currently
used on Wikipedia!). A couple of them while changing the license
requested me for the link to the article on which their photo is used.
It may be a good idea for us to concentrate on getting pictures from
Flickr rather than conducting more photowalks (by identifying requisite
photographs and requesting them via comments on the said photo and email
to the photographer/flickr user).

Hoi,
I am really excited that Junaid P V was given commit rights to the MediaWiki
code repository. As you may know, he is working on supporting input methods
for the Indian languages. There is already an extension that helps for some
languages but we are looking for support in MediaWiki itself.
I blogged about this and used a picture of sheep walking over a dam. It is
proverbial in my language; my hope is therefore that many Indians will find
their way as MediaWiki developers. Not only to support their language but
also to make MediaWiki even better then it is today.
Thanks,
GerardM

Dear Wikimedians,
Here is my a short report of the Kolkata Wikipedia meet up & workshop for
wikipedia projects that was held on 2011 February 12 at *Indian Institute
of Foreign Trade*(Kolkata Campus)* *Saltlake, EP Block, Sector
V,Kolkata,West Bengal.
The Meet up and workshop was attended by more than 25 participants.
The workshop was divided into two sessions. The first session was an
introductory presentation about Wikipedia, and wikiprojects. In the second
session we introduced Wikipedia editing to the participants.
The participants asked many questions about wiki, Wikimedia Foundation,
Wikipedia, sister projects and so on. They also asked some queries regarding
directorial board, why pages are protected, policies, and so on. The
participants are introduced to wikipedia editing with wikimarkup in a simple
way.
