A Wiki workshop in Salem was conducted on December 11, 2011 by the Tamil
Wiki community. Paavadi Girls higher secondary school had graciously given
their computer lab for this workshop. This was made possible by the efforts
of an excellent newcomer to Tamil wiki projects - ParvathiSri, who is a
school teacher in Salem.
The workshop started sharply at 10 AM. Attendees included school teachers,
students, college professors and Tamil enthusiasts. There were about 15
attendees in Total. Wikimedians ParvathiSri, Thagavaluzhavan, Sodabottle,
Essar & I spoke and conducted editing sessions.
I gave a presentation on Wikipedia. In that session I covered 5 pillars of
WP, reliability of WP, importance of references, tasks for a Wikipedian,
benefits to a Wikipedian by editing WP. After that Thagavaluzhavan spoke
about Wiktionary, where he used Ta Wiktionary to explain everything instead
of using a presentation. He explained the multilingual nature of Wiktionary
and the need for multimedia content in it.
Next, Sodabottle explained the other sister projects - Wikisource,
Wikinews, Wikibooks and Commons. He explained the necessity of content
creation in mother tongues. A short introduction to the ongoing Tamil Wiki
Media Contest (http://ta.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contest<http://ta.wikipedia.org/wiki/contest>)
was also given.
Attendees didn't raise any questions in the Q&A session. But, they did ask
many doubts in the hands-on session that followed. During the session
the attendees
taught about creating account, WP navigation, terminology, uploading file,
using a file in an article, talking to another user. There were many
questions raised in this session. We, Wikimedians clarified their doubts
with clear explanations.
Around 1 PM the workshop came to an end. Group photos were taken. As a part
of Tamil Wiki Media Contest a small photo-walk had been arranged at the
end. User Essar, User Thagavaluzhavan and I took photos all along the road
sides of Salem Bazaar.

Subject: [Foundation-l] Missing wikis now redirect to Incubator
To: Wikimedia Foundation Mailing List <foundation-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hello all,
As of yesterday, when you go to a missing wiki (the redlinks on
Special:SiteMatrix) you will no longer see a static "this wiki does
not exist" error, but it will redirect to the Wikimedia Incubator,
where there is either a development wiki or an info page inviting you
to start one.
Exceptions are Wikiversity and Wikisource, because they are hosted on
different wikis.
For existing development wikis, going to for example
<http://or.wikiquote.org> directs you to the main page
<http://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wq/or/ପ୍ରଧାନ_ପୃଷ୍ଠା>. You can
also link directly to a page:
<http://or.wikiquote.org/wiki/ରଜ_ଦୋଳି_ଗୀତ> to
<http://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wq/or/ରଜ_ଦୋଳି_ଗୀତ>. This also
enables interwiki links to these Incubator pages. (Interwiki bot
maintains: you are welcome to make use of that!)
For missing wikis, going to for example <http://arz.wikinews.org>
directs you to an info page
<http://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wn/arz> which is an improved
version of the "this wiki does not exist" page: it is adapted to the
respective language, and the messages are localisable through
<
https://translatewiki.net/wiki/Special:Translate/ext-wikimediaincubatorinfo…
>.
(Translators: you are welcome to translate that!)
It only works for languages listed on SiteMatrix, so in general it
doesn't work for Wikipedias on Incubator.
Regards,
Robin (aka SPQRobin)

Dear All
As you might be aware, there is one more team member I have been trying to get on board for the India Programs Team (http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikimediaindia-l/2011-September/004251…) - Consultant, Communications.
I have unfortunately not been able to find the right candidate (yet!) for this. The role involves community communications (newsletters, mailing list updates, village pump updates, etc.), press/media/PR (building media relationships, supporting community initiatives through media coverage, etc.), social media (using social networks like facebook and twitter to compliment community efforts) and digital outreach (supporting community building through online outreach of existing readers through online tutorials, videos, etc.)
I have interviewed dozens of candidates - most of who are really bright - but I'm not confident that we have anyone yet who is adequately familiar with our movement, community & projects. Having said that, I'm still looking; If you know of anyone, please do connect them with me. In addition, I am asking some of the interested candidates who had applied to get more involved with the community and build understanding and familiarity; we can relook at their candidature down the line.
Do let me know if you need any clarifications.
Best
hisham
Dear all,
This is to invite all the women editors and contributors on Wikipedia and
other sister projects from India to *WikiWomenCamp*. I'd like to invite all
our fellow women members from the chapter and contributors outside to
attend the conference in Buenos Aires, Argentina in May 2012. While the
conference is largely aimed at women involved in the Wikimedia movement,
the organisers feel that women editors from Wikipedia, helping on Indic
communities can also offer a unique perspective that can be of use to
female leaders inside the Wikimedia movement and help expand the movement
to make it inclusive for all. In turn, we hope that we can provide them
with contacts and assistance with their work related projects. Details
related to the conference can be found at:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiWomenCamp
Do pass this on to the other lists concerned and hope to see substantial
participation from India.Let's do it! :)
Warmly
Noopur
