*🌿 Wiki Loves Earth Ireland 2026 is open*

Just in case you missed the mention in our April newsletter https://wikimedia.ie/2026/04/30/nuachtlitir-aibrean-2026-athbhreithniu-ar-aibrean/, the 7th annual Wiki Loves Earth photography competition opened on 1 May and runs until 30 June 2026. If you're out and about this month - walking, hiking, or just passing through somewhere interesting - you're eligible to enter. Photograph any natural protected area on the island of Ireland (National Parks, Special Areas of Conservation, Ramsar Sites) and upload to Wikimedia Commons under a free licence.

Ag rith in éineacht leis an gcomórtas grianghrafadóireachta, tá tionscadal eagarthóireachta ar siúl againn ar Vicipéid. Tháinig an smaoineamh ó Chonan Wolff ag cruinniú mhí an Mhárta - chuir sé chun suntais go bhfuil bearna mhór ar Vicipéid na Gaeilge maidir le plandaí dúchasacha agus ionracha na hÉireann. Buíochas le Conan as an moladh sin. Is féidir leat alt nua a chruthú, alt atá ann cheana a fheabhsú, nó tagairtí, catagóirí, nó íomhánna a chur leis. Níl ort a bheith i d'eagarthóir taithíoch - tá liosta speiceas agus acmhainní úsáideacha ar fáil ar leathanach an tionscadail.

Running alongside the photography competition, we are running an editorial project on Irish Wikipedia. The idea came from Conan Wolff at the March meeting - he highlighted that there is a big gap in the Irish Wikipedia regarding native and invasive plants of Ireland. Thanks to Conan for that. You can create a new article, improve an existing article, or add references, categories, or images. You don't have to be an experienced editor - there is a list of species and useful resources available on the project page.

*🎙️ For Tech's Sake Podcast*

This week I was a guest on the For Tech's Sake podcast , https://shows.acast.com/for-techs-sake recorded a few weeks ago with Elaine. We had a lovely chat about Wikipedia - the rabbit holes, the content gaps, new AI policy decisions, vandalism, reliable sources, and the volunteers who keep it all going. It was a really enjoyable conversation and a good one to share with anyone who's curious about how Wikipedia works.
