Boa fonte. Também encontrei semelhante explicação sobre o ejusdem generis numa tal de Wikipedia:

Ejusdem generis (Of the same kinds, class, or nature)
When a list of two or more specific descriptors is followed by more general descriptors, the otherwise wide meaning of the general descriptors must be restricted to the same class, if any, of the specific words that precede them. For example, where "cars, motor bikes, motor powered vehicles" are mentioned, the word "vehicles" would be interpreted in a limited sense (therefore vehicles cannot be interpreted as including airplanes).

Quando a redação legislativa é boa, o ejusdem generis não precisa ser aplicado. No exemplo abaixo, em vez do legislador mencionar "automobiles, trucks, tractors, motorcycles and other motor-powered vehicles" e assim obrigar o juiz a usar o ejusdem generis (para limitar o "other motor-powered vehicles"), a redação legislativa poderia ser melhorada, especificando "automobiles, trucks, tractors, motorcycles and other land-based motor-powered vehicles".

Abraços,

Joaquim Mariano

Ejusdem Generis

(eh-youse-dem generous) v adj. Latin for "of the same kind," used to interpret loosely written statutes. Where a law lists specific classes of persons or things and then refers to them in general, the general statements only apply to the same kind of persons or things specifically listed. Example: if a law refers to automobiles, trucks, tractors, motorcycles and other motor-powered vehicles, "vehicles" would not include airplanes, since the list was of land-based transportation

A resposta do Mike Godwin é ótima.

O melhor é a ironia da carta:
"While we appreciate your desire to revise the statute to reflect your expansive vision of it, the fact is that we must work with the actual language of the statute, not the aspirational version of Section 701 that you forwarded to us."
"May we talk a little bit further about ejusdem generis and your creative editing of the statute?"
"I’m requoting this passage because I truly love it"

E no final não deixou barato: "we are prepared to argue our view in court".
