Yes - I bring it up because, while of course there is not direct
funding (to Nevio's point) yet for this initiative, it is really
important to have the infrastructure in place before professors jump
to incorporate the editing, only to be frustrated by a lack of
professionalization. To Everton's points, time is a precious
commodity for a busy professor, so the simpler it is for them to get
involved obviously the better! One bad experience with a professor
at this early stage in the development of the global university
program could seriously harm the reputation and consequently the
success of the program at large.
Everton - I think you are correct in saying right now evangelism for
Wikipedia as a broader project is certainly a necessary activity,
and I am so glad you are making the time to do so! Hopefully that
will lead to very interested professors in being part of a classroom
based program, which I think we would be more able to verify
fruitful gains (e.g., actual articles being produced).
All that said...I am hoping WMF will be able to set up more
infrastructure and tools surrounding this classroom based model, so
that this CAN be a simple[r] roll-out in Brazil/other countries!
That i the plan right now, at least. As I mentioned, Frank and I
are working on a global university program proposal
(http://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Global_University_Program) which
is still WIP and has not been approved yet. I'd love your thoughts
on this page if you have any.
Best,
Jessie

Oh I see Jessie. Thank you. But one of our various problems

For the Ambassador program, Frank Schulenburg and I
are indeed working on the best way to get this program
started in other areas outside of the US. We have not
completed the final recommendations yet, but one page
that might be useful as you work on this is "How to build a class-based
university program." You are well on the way to
completing some of the steps, but there are a few
things that are still outstanding.
One of the things that seems to be absent as of now
but is the most important, probably, in determining
the success of the program is to build infrastructure
on Wikipedia. This could be similar to the Public
Policy Initiative page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_United_States_Public_Policy),
but essentially is just a hub for all people
contributing to the project.
Has anyone started building something to this extent?
Since this is the first type of project of its nature
done in Brazil, I think it is worth putting in the
time to develop the right tools, so that professors
are properly supported from the outset: if the first
few professors have bad experiences, it will be very
hard to get more positive ones going forward.
Obrigada :)
