Subject: [Ambassadors US] Ambassador survey results!!!
To: wikipedia-ambassadors@googlegroups.com
Hi Ambassadors!
Thanks to over 80 of you who took the Ambassador survey this past summer, we have some excellent data about the program. Your input is very appreciated, and your responses and comments are impacting the work of Global Education team and current Ambassadors as they shape the program for the future.
The response rate was really good, over 50%, and the results are reliable. The survey results are so great that I wrote about it in the Wikipedia blog post, check it out! http://blog.wikimedia.org/2011/09/14/results-from-first-wikipedia-ambassador-survey/
Some of the highlights are:
- Overwhelmingly both CAs and OAs identify their role as helping newcomers.
- OAs were strongly motivated by helping newcomers, and CAs were strongly motivated by increasing Wikipedia credibility and use on university campuses.
- OAs and CAs have different needs to be effective Ambassadors in their different roles, but both would like feedback from professors about their assistance.
- Both OAs and CAs felt responsible first to the students they were working with and second to the Wikipedia community.
- Both CAs and OAs agreed on the program outcomes:
- Wikipedia content improved
- Use of Wikipedia as a teaching tool increased
- Ambassadors provided support for college-educated newcomers
- There was an increase of Wikipedia's credibility among academia
- Most survey respondents felt that they had opportunity to impact the program
- There were lots of great comments and ideas
There were some gaps in the program that you identified through the survey. So here are some issues that the Ambassadors can help the Global Education team address:
- Professors need some type of orientation to Wikipedia
- There was a gap in communication between the instructors/CAs on campus and the OAs on wiki
- There were A LOT of communication problems between OAs and students
- CA training needs some improvements
- OAs need clarification about student requirements and participation, and what students and instructors will expect from OAs
I attached the report that I made for the PPI team. The complete results are in that report. If you would like the raw data, contact me. Thank you again for your participation, it makes a difference.
all the best, Amy
