Queensland State Archives are putting some of their image collection on
Flickr:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/queenslandstatearchives/
The good news for us is that many of the older ones are CC-BY (newer ones
are "All rights reserved").
And there is a much larger image (and other digitised documents) collection
on the QSA's website:
http://www.archivessearch.qld.gov.au/Image/ImageBasicSearch.aspx
where it seems the older photos are labelled "Copyright expired" without any
requirement for attribution being mentioned. Not sure why there would be
this difference, but I guess it doesn't matter too much either way for
loading onto Commons.
Tip for the novice on the QSA website, there are 2 types of searches: one on
the catalogue and one on the digital collection. Make sure you are using the
"image search" (digital collection) and not the "archive search" (paper
collection), unfortunately the way they do the linking between pages can
sometimes switch you back into "archive search" mode and you wonder why you
can't find something you found earlier.

In case anyone is not yet aware, there is going to be a Wikimedia in Higher
Education symposium at The University of Sydney on Friday 5 April 2013.
Both Wikimedians and Educators are welcome. If you are interested in
presenting a paper, the call for papers closes tonight, so please be quick
to at least indicate that you're interested.

HI Everybody
Freopedia has been progressing slowly along over the summer months, for
those havent yet heard of
Freopedia<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:GLAM/Freopedia>its a
project supported by the Fremantle Society, Wikimedia Australia, The
Wikimedia Foundation and City of Fremantle to QR code places of interest
within the Fremantle area. We are now at the point of selecting articles
for the first round of QR coded plaques to be created. We need help from
Wikipedians to review the selected articles checking them against policies
most importantly naming conventions once the plaques are created we'd
prefer not to have articles renamed, merged or deleted. Also can you add
these articles to your watchlists for the obvious reasons
the selected articles are wiki-linked at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:GLAM/Freopedia/Articles
if you have any comments about articles please leave them on the talk page
of the article, if you have general questions about Freopedia please email
me.
Thanks

Dear Australian lists, and Cultural partnerships list,
I've been invited to give a presentation to the staff of the State Library
of NSW next month, as part of a series of presentations to the (relatively)
senior staff by different "key audience groups" about how that group uses
the library services. It's a bit like a one-man focus group. For those not
from Australia - this is the country's oldest public library and has an
unrivalled collection of original materials about the early history of the
country. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SLNSW They also are starting to get
very active in Wikipedia themselves:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:GLAM/SLNSW
I have been asked to talk about how the "typical Wikimedian" would use
their services and how it could be improved. Whatever the "typical"
wikimedian is...
1) I would appreciate if anyone could send me through any thoughts that
they already have about using the State Library of NSW (online or offline)
and I will convey them.
2) I would very much appreciate "user
stories<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_story>"
about what YOU, as a Wikimedian, do with YOUR library - and how YOUR
library makes this easy/hard.
3) Equally, if you want to have a play with their website, and send me your
thoughts, here it is:
Main page: http://www.sl.nsw.gov.au/
Manuscripts and images catalogue: http://acms.sl.nsw.gov.au/search/
SimpleSearch.aspx
[book] catalogue here: http://library.sl.nsw.gov.au/search/
Personally, my initial thoughts are to talk about things like:
- image licensing and access policies/fees (copyright etc.)
- difficulty of citation of original materials (do I use the 'digital order
number', the 'call number', the URL etc?)
But I'm very very interested in hearing what YOU do and what YOU would like
to see from a major library, in the idea world, about how they could serve
us as an audience.
Sincerely,
-Liam
Hello.
Please join us on the 24 February (Sunday evening) in Canberra for a catch up as John Vandenberg will be in town.
View the event here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Canberra/February_2013 and add your name to the list if you would like to come along and say hello.
At the stage we're pretty flexible on a time and place so feel free to make a suggestion for your favourite Civic café ;)
Hope to see you there.

ATTN: Australians, mostly ;-)
During the week of ALIA at which Sue Gardner keynoted, the Wikimedia
Australia committee consulted with Australian GLAM partners and
formulated a concept to support a significant number of Wikimedians in
Residence across Australia. After a bit of refinement, and having
received a few in-principle agreements from GLAMs, the committee
approved the following proposal on Sunday.

If you will reside in Australia in the 2013-14 financial year, and can
work as a WiR one day a week for six months, please apply here (and/or
tell your friends):

If you think cultural institutions in your region will be interested
and have relevant material in their collection, please ask them to
email committee(a)wikimedia.org.au .

Hi All,
Just a quick reminder that if you weren't able to catch the live streaming
version of Sue Gardner's Australian interview on Wednesday night, it's
being played on ABC Radio today at 11am across the country (except
Victoria, for "complicated ABC reasons"). The programme you are looking
for is "Conversations with Richard Fidler".
If you miss that, I am assuming that you'll be able to download a podcast
of the show later tonight to listen.

Cheers,
Craig Franklin
