Hi,
The board will be meeting in Melbourne CBD on 5-6 January, thanks to a free
venue being provided by La Trobe University.
Everyone is welcome to attend the public meeting in person or remotely.
There will be limited numbers in person. We havent worked out what we do if
too many people want to come. Probably members first, regular contributors
next, etc.

I've set up a public facebook event for you you to easily invite more
people and to confirm attendance.

Hi all,
I think we should start prepping for Wikipedia Day meetups. The actual day is a weekday, so it might be good to have it on Sunday, January 6. The committee will be sitting in Melbourne that weekend, so I will be making some arrangements for Melbourne, but it'd be great to have Meetups on the day in other cities. If you have an interest in organising a meetup for that Sunday, please let us know :-)
Let's make Wikipedia's 12th anniversary memorable!

Hi everyone,
For those who aren't aware, linux.conf.au is Australia's national Linux
conference and will be held in Canberra from Jan 28-Feb 1.
Those who are interested in the open source software side of things, as
well as open content, may be interested in the following program being
offered by Linux Australia, to assist people who would otherwise find it
difficult to attend.
Note the last criteria, which mentions Wikipedia specifically. Be sure to
mention it if you apply :)
Regards,
Charles

Linux Australia is restarting the Regional Delegates Program from previous
years.
These grants aim to reduce the financial barriers to attending
linux.conf.au2013, by
subsidising the registration and travel costs of contributors to the FOSS
community who are
students, on a low income, and others who would otherwise have difficulty
affording the cost
of attending the conference.
How do I apply?
Our priority will be to maximise the number of attendees we can assist.
Consideration will be
given to grant requests from outside Australia and New Zealand; however,
due to the larger
costs, we would have to balance each such application against the number of
local delegates
we could otherwise support.
Delegates who need to be accompanied by a guardian or caregiver (e.g,
minors or persons
with special needs) should include these details in their grant request.
Minors should include
contact details for their parent or guardian and have them sign the
application.
Your application should:
-Provide background information about your contribution to or involvement
with the open source community
- Explain what you hope to learn from the conference.
- Show financial circumstances which would otherwise prevent you from
attending the conference.
- Provide details of what assistance you would require in order to attend.
This doesn’t need to be a detailed list - “Flights to/from $HOMETOWN +
accommodation” would be sufficient.
- Be in OpenDocument format, plain text, HTML or PDF.
Applicants will be selected on the following criteria:
- Participation in FOSS projects – art, hardware, software, documentation
- Reason for attending linux.conf.au
- Area of study
- Voluntary or paid work in IT
- Future plans/projects in mind
- Membership of FOSS related groups eg. a LUG, Linux Australia, LinuxChix, a
Hackerspace, Wikipedia, OWOOT etc.
Email your application to RDP(a)lca2013.linux.org.au.
Cheers,
RDP team

Hi All,
Just a quick note that there are a couple of proposals on the WMAU wiki
that are currently in the "public comment and review" phase. Extra eyes
are always welcomed on proposals, whether they're from members of the
chapter or not.
1. http://www.wikimedia.org.au/wiki/Proposal:Paralympic_Winter_Sports -
This is a proposal to fund part of a trip to the United States for a group
of Australian volunteers to document winter sports. Note that obviously
there's been a bit of 'history' around this grant, it would be warmly
appreciated if feedback could be limited to the merits of the proposal
itself, and further commentary around the circumstances surrounding it
could be kept to a minimum.
2. http://www.wikimedia.org.au/wiki/Proposal:WLM_2013 - This is a proposal
for the chapter to get engaged and take part in the Wiki Loves Monuments
programme in 2013. Consensus seems to be fairly firm that we ought to do
it, but there is a fair bit of interesting discussion around what the best
approach might be.
There are also a couple of "proposed proposals" that could benefit from
some further exposure:
1.
http://www.wikimedia.org.au/wiki/User:John_Vandenberg/Suspending_the_privat…
-
Proposal to suspend the chapter's private members mailing list. An
alternate approach being discussed on the talk page is to put in place a
code of conduct that all subscribers would be expected to adhere to.
2. http://www.wikimedia.org.au/wiki/User:Tony1/Proposed_membership_table -
A proposed (optional) public list of chapter members and other Australian
volunteers to keep a track of the geographic spread of members, and to make
it easier to find Australian volunteers to collaborate with.
3.
http://www.wikimedia.org.au/wiki/User:Leighblackall/Bendigo_Victoria_2013 -
Proposal for an editing workshop, focusing on the field of Health Sciences,
to take place in Bendigo in 2013.
Cheers,
Craig Franklin

Dear all,
The Affiliations Committee [1], the committee that is responsible for
guiding volunteers in establishing Chapters, User Groups and Thematic
Organizations ("affiliates" in short) and approving them when they are
ready is looking for about 6 new members.
The main focus of AffCom is to guide groups of volunteers in forming
affiliates. We make sure that the group is large enough to be viable
(and advise them on how to get bigger), review bylaws for compliance
with the requirements and best practices, and advise the Board of the
Wikimedia Foundation on issues connected to Chapters, Thematic
Organizations and User Groups.
This requires communication with volunteers all over the World,
negotiating skills and cultural sensitivity and the ability to
understand legal texts. We try to get a healthy mix of different skill
sets in our members.
Key skills/experience that we are looking for in candidate members,
are typically:
* Excitement by the challenge of helping to empower groups of
volunteers worldwide
* Willingness to work in a sometimes bureaucratic, sometimes political
process
* 4 hours per week availability[2]
* International orientation
* Very good communication skills in English
* Ability to work and communicate with other cultures
* Strong understanding of the structure and work of affiliates and the WMF
* Communication skills in other languages are a major plus
* Experience with or in an active affiliate is a major plus
With the help of the Affiliations Committee, 2012 has been an exciting
year of transformation for the movement with the introduction of new
types of affiliation. This means that the workload of the Committee
has increased and diversified and help is wanted! Currently many
applications to become a Chapter, Thematic Organization or User Group
are in the pipeline and can use your attention and dedication!
You can send your applications with your name, contact data (e-mail,
wiki username), experience and motivation to join to the AffCom email
address, affcom AT lists DOT wikimedia DOT org by January 12, 2013.
You will get a confirmation that your application came through.
Members are usually selected every twelve months for staggered two
year terms. The applications will be considered by the current members
and outgoing members and Committee advisers, who are not seeking
re-selection.
Since I will be a candidate for re-selection myself, this process will
be managed by another committee member, Lodewijk Gelauff. I hope for
many suitable applications. If you have any questions, please don't
hesitate to email me or Lodewijk[3] privately. We are happy to chat or
have a phone call with anyone about our work, if this helps them
decide to apply.
Please distribute this call among your networks, and do apply if you
are interested.
Best regards,
Bence Damokos

Hi All,
As you may be aware, at the recent AGM, the members of Wikimedia Australia
approved our annual plan, but also directed the committee to revise and
adjust the plan to a more modest state with a view to applying for Round 2
funding from the FDC, early in the new year.
With that in mind... what sort of revisions and feedback do you have for
us? Obviously I can't promise to satisfy every single person but I'm
interested to feel the pulse and see what people generally speaking are
thinking. The only thing I can promise is that if you don't provide any
feedback, then I won't be able to consider it!
If you're not comfortable replying in a public setting, I'm happy to
consider any comments put forward in private emails as well.
Cheers,
Craig Franklin
Treasurer - Wikimedia Australia
That's why I copied it in to the public wikimedia-au list as well. There
are people on the members list who are not on the public list, and I want
to reach as many people as possible.
Cheers,
Craig
