Hello list, especially Sydneysiders,
A friend of mine, Donna Benjamin, is organising an event in Sydney in
October called "Open-Edge" (as in education I think).
http://open-edge.info/ They have relatively short speaking slots
(15-30 minutes) and I think it would be great if there was a
Wikimedian presentation there.
Does anyone feel up for it? She is looking to finalise the line-up
relatively soon.
If you have never presented before, those of us who have can give you
some tips for what to cover, common questions etc. There are also
quite a few existing slide sets etc you can draw on. It's quite a
short time so you don't need to present the comprehensive thing ever,
and the audience should be quite friendly.
Anyone keen?
thanks,
Brianna
Hi,
The group formerly known as AussieChix (Australian chapter of
LinuxChix) has renamed and rescoped itself and is launching as OWOOT.
If you are a geek girl or woman with an open tech bent, please feel
free to join, or pass the word on to other folks who might be
interested.
cheers
Brianna

Subject: Oceania Women of Open Tech launches
Oceania Women of Open Tech (OWOOT) is a new group for women in open technology
in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. It has recently formed from
the local chapters of LinuxChix, but with a wider scope focussing on open
technology generally.
OWOOT welcomes all women interested in open technology, including open source,
open hardware, open data and free culture. OWOOT activities will include:
- the Haecksen miniconference at linux.conf.au, and meetups and events at
other conferences
- periodic local social events
- email and IRC forums where you can meet other women from the area who work
with, build or use open technology
OWOOT forums are open to men to join if they wish, as long as they keep in mind
that the purpose of the group is supporting women in open tech and allowing
them to meet each other.
Find out more about OWOOT at our website: http://owoot.org/

Subject: [Wikitech-l] Fundraising bug triage - 5 October
To: Wikimedia developers <wikitech-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
What: Fundraising bug triage
When: Wendesday, October 5, 2011, 17:00UTC (10:00am PDT)
Where: #wikimedia-dev on irc.freenode.net
Wednesday, October 5, we will be conducting a bug triage for open
engineering issues relating to the Wikimedia Fundraiser. We will be
tackling some low-hanging fruit focussing mostly on some of the fundraiser
metric reporting tools, as well as some non-Mediawiki related tools.
This is a great opportunity for new devs to get involved with MediaWiki
development as well as for veterans to help out with one of the most
critical projects for the Wikimedia Foundation. We also have some CiviCRM
related bugs - so if you're a CiviCRM hacker or interested in exploring
another awesome open source project, this is for you!
Take a look at some of the open bugs we'll be addressing during the triage:

Looking forward to seeing you there!

We were not added the printed program of TINA, however Leigh found out
that they were adding inserts into the program. Jutta and I dropped
into the Octopod.org office on Saturday. They kindly provided us with
a printer and a computer, and Jutta created a poster while I drove one
of their volunteers around town to deliver equipment. We printed 100
color A5, which were added to the programs that were available at the
venues in the afternoon, and 10 color A3 posters were placed in
windows and on walls around town. The regional library, bookshops in
the mall and used bookshops in the cafe strip were very happy to put
up the poster.
The day started very slow until the first person arrived after 11am,
which was good because we had some fundamental technical problems. No
Internet. We were provided with unlimited wireless which we couldnt
connect to in the venue, and wired internet which we didn't have a
cable for. To begin with I used my dongle, however we only had a
cached version of the visualation because my dongle and the projector
both use USB, and my laptop only had one USB slot, so it was one or
the other until that was resolved.
Ten people turned up. Some only watched the visualisation on the
screen, talked briefly and left, however three hung around and talked
for about an hour each. One gentleman is involved in http://wik.me/ ,
which is built from Wikipedia data, and we talked at length about
data, natural languages and dbPedia. The other two were writers who
wanted to understand Commons, Wikipedia and free licences better and
ultimately they wanted to give back to Wikipedia. Both created a
Wikipedia account and made their first Wikipedia edits on the day
(Stdragon04 and lakelady2282).
One article was created on the day:
http://enwp.org/Ostrovo_Unit
All three want to be part of a Newcastle user group.
While the turn out was low due to limited exposure, these three
attendees made it worth the effort, and I think we should do it again
next year, but bigger!
Thanks for Jutta and Leigh for helping make it happen.
We also announced the Photography competition at TINA, with Laura
creating the poster.

This Friday coming, people will be blogging about women.
http://findingada.com/
Is there a list of notable Australian women without a biography on WP?
On the day we could monitor Australian blogs, etc for mentions of Ada
Lovelace and write biographies about the women mentioned if they are
notable?
This is our first presidents blog post on the first Ada Lovelace Day in 2009.
