Hello list, especially Sydneysiders,
A friend of mine, Donna Benjamin, is organising an event in Sydney in
October called "Open-Edge" (as in education I think).
http://open-edge.info/ They have relatively short speaking slots
(15-30 minutes) and I think it would be great if there was a
Wikimedian presentation there.
Does anyone feel up for it? She is looking to finalise the line-up
relatively soon.
If you have never presented before, those of us who have can give you
some tips for what to cover, common questions etc. There are also
quite a few existing slide sets etc you can draw on. It's quite a
short time so you don't need to present the comprehensive thing ever,
and the audience should be quite friendly.
Anyone keen?
thanks,
Brianna
G'day all,
per the below, and here;
http://www.wikimedia.org.au/wiki/Talk:Wikimedia_Australia#web_page_speed_ti…
I thought I'd just try a gentle 'ping' to the mailing list to see if these
sorts of loading times are normal, or as I suspect, a bit below par - thanks
to all for the various technical works undertaken to date, and hopefully we
can find what's causing the rather slow loading of our mainpage without too
much hassle :-)
(there's beer and pizza in it for anyone clever who can fix it up, if
they're in Sydney ;-)
cheers,
Peter,
PM.

Subject: [Foundation-l] Chapter selected board seats - call for
candidates, deadline extended
To: Wikimedia Foundation Mailing List <foundation-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
To whom it may concern,
All nominations for candidates for the chapter selected board seats
were supposed to be received by the end of today, however only three
have been received. The chapters will be more likely to make a good
selection if they have a large group of candidates to choose from,
therefore I am extending the deadline for nominations by 10 days,
until the 27th May. Subsequent stages of the process will be pushed
back accordingly. Hopefully a decision will still be made in time for
the board meeting at Wikimania, but this cannot be guaranteed.
The original call for candidates, with the new deadline, is repeated
below. Please help us get a large number of nominations by
distributing this call as widely as possible on mailing lists, blogs
and wikis.
Can you, or someone you know, help guide Wikimedia Foundation through
the next exciting steps of its strategic development and growth?
The Wikimedia Chapters are looking for two candidates to sit on the
Wikimedia Foundation's Board of Trustees for 2 years commencing in
July 2010. The new board members will be faced with the challenge of
helping decide the future direction of the only top-10 internet
property that is run by a non-profit organisation. The Wikimedia
websites are constructed by hundreds of thousands of volunteers
world-wide, supported by a small but growing number of staff and an
international network of chapters.
The successful candidates will most importantly be committed to the
Wikimedia mission and willing to work with the various stakeholders of
the Wikimedia movement, including the volunteers and the chapters that
provide essential support for the movement. They will have the time to
do this, with the appropriate communication skills (including a good
standard of English) and ability to work as a team. They will also be
able and willing to travel, and have an international attitude.
The candidates will ideally be open-minded with experience of
international affairs and governance techniques. They will have good
communication skills, as well the ability to think strategically and
to work independently as well as part of a team.
The process that will be followed for this selection can be viewed
here: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Chapter-selected_Board_seats/Process
All nominations must be sent to the moderator (Thomas Dalton from
Wikimedia UK) and deputy moderator (José Spierts from Wikimedia
Nederlands) by 23:59 UTC 27th May. If you would like to nominate
yourself or someone else, please see the instructions here:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Chapter-selected_Board_seats/Nominate
The chapters wish to locate truly excellent board members and believe
that can best be done if there are a large number of varied and
quality candidates to consider. Therefore, the chapters ask that
everyone that thinks they, or someone they know, would be a good board
member submit a nomination. They also ask that this call for
candidates be distributed as widely as possible on mailing lists,
village pumps, blogs, etc..
Best regards,
Thomas Dalton,
Moderator
Hi all,
As some of you know, we've been having some technical issues.
We have had some issues which affected the delivery of emails on the @
wikimedia.org.au domain, so if you have emailed one of the chapter email
addresses and haven't received a response, please consider forwarding your
email to us again. Particularly important, if you have written to me
requesting a grant, please resend your request.
We have also had some technical issues with the official website. Last week,
Andrew Garrett (our systems administrator) successfully updated the
MediaWiki software to version 1.16, so hopefully the earlier problems are
now fixed with the upgrade, but please do let us know if you notice any
further problems and issues popping up with the site operations.
Our most sincere apologies for any convenience and frustration these
technical problems have caused anyone.
Regards,
Sarah
Hi all,
The committee is currently considering the issue of chapter selected seats
on the WMF board.
We have the opportunity to submit nominees for consideration by the
chapters. If you can think of someone you think might be an appropriate
candidate (or you're that person yourself!) and you'd like to make any
suggestions, please let us know by emailing us off-list on
committee(a)wikimedia.org.au.
Regards,
Sarah
Hi all,
Some news: on Sunday I resigned as president of Wikimedia Australia.
The ctte accepted my resignation and as per our Rules, appointed one
of the committee members to the office, who will serve until the next
AGM.
I guess this news may come as a shock or it may not. It's something
I've been thinking about for quite a while and not something that I
decided lightly or in haste. If anything, I probably decided too
slowly.
There's no bad blood with any of the ctte members, and it's not about
anything that has happened in Wikimedia land. Rather, it's about what
goes on in Brianna land (aka "personal reasons"), and whether or not I
can do any useful work in the role. I don't feel able to any more, and
I think my standing aside will be a good catalyst for the chapter to
get visibly moving again.
I'm sorry to let you down by not fulfilling my term with full efforts.
Sometimes reality does not quite stretch far enough to meet the
dreams. And being on a committee like ours ("distributed" you might
say) requires a lot of stretching.
The committee members have been very supportive of me while I was in
the role, and in my decision now as well. It actually gives me great
peace of mind to know that I am leaving the chapter in such good
hands. They are all very capable and have great ideas, and want to
support members, and if members are able to support them back, I know
awesome things will happen.
I am not sure how involved in Wikimedia things I will be in the
future. Chapter business has been my main Wikimedia business for a
while now. I hope to take a bit of breathing space and then see how
things go. Having said that, I am booked up to go to Wikimania in
July. :)
Yours in boldness,
Brianna Laugher
no longer
WMAU President.
G'day all,
does the chapter have any grants proposals heading in this year?
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Index
Do we have any structure for creating / supporting a chapter grant like
this?
I have a few ideas and opportunities - for wiki use in education, hopefully
in partnership with nsw dep. of ed. - if I write something up in the next
week or so, I suppose we could discuss it on our wiki, and forward it to the
grants page linked above for consideration if appropriate?
I think it's important for a functioning healthy chapter to try to engage
with processes like this, so if you too have any ideas or opportunities,
please do pipe up, and let's work on them on the wiki, and get them going
:-)
cheers,
Peter,
PM.
Hello all,
I have written a small private email to Brianna in support of her
work, her style and her need to resign. I will add no more here but to
concur with my colleagues in their well worded praise of her
achievements.
I also thank my fellow committee members for their unanimous support
in my assuming the presidency. I will attempt to force my two rather
large feet into Brianna's slippers. I fully intend to support the
chapter, the committee and our loyal members to the best of my ability
and I will be pleased if I can reach at least some semblance of the
level of support that has been given by Brianna to the community prior
to this date.

Well, the Gov2.0 report itself was very specific that it should be retrospective - in fact recommendation 6.5 is all about retroactive licensing of already published material.
But the Government response has only agreed to this 'in principle' - they've left it up to a set of guidelines to be determined by the Attorney-General's Department as to how all this will actually work in practice.
And based on response times from previous reports, I can't imagine we'll see the guidelines anytime soon.

What can I say, this is absolutely awesome!
Will this take effect retroactively, or will it only be new stuff that's
CC-BY? Either way, it's a tremendous step forward!

Big news from the Australian Government on the issue of access to
public sector information.
In an official response released yesterday, the Federal Government has
agreed to 12 of the 13 recommendations to come out of the Government
2.0 Taskforce report released last December ? including Recommendation
6.3, which states that Creative Commons Attribution should be the
default licensing position for PSI.
In addition, the government has also agreed that the new Information
Commissioner currently being established will issue guidelines to
ensure that:
???? by default PSI is free, open, and reusable;
???? PSI is released as quickly as possible;
???? PSI may only be withheld where there is a legal obligation
preventing its release.
???? when Commonwealth records become available for public access
under the Archives Act 1983, works covered by Crown copyright will be
automatically licensed under an appropriate open attribution licence.
The response also includes an undertaking that the Attorney-General?s
Department will examine the current state of copyright law with regard
to orphan works (including section 200AB of the Copyright Act 1968),
with the aim of recommending amendments that would remove the
practical restrictions that currently impede the use of such works.
This is the single biggest commitment to CC licensing and open access
principles by Australian government, and should mean that the majority
of Australian government material will soon be available under a CC
licence. The fact that both the response and the announcement have
been released under CC BY is a good start.
The assignment of responsibility for implementation of the commitment
to the new Information Commissioner is also an encouraging move, and
will hopefully see a more coordinated approach to IP policy across the
Australian government as a whole.
The response is available here and a blog post from Finance Minister
Tanner is available here.
