I'll be in England in December, so I can't go to this event on online
encyclopedias. Is anyone else willing to present a workshop on
Wikipedia at it?
Angela.

Subject: Upcoming ANZDEG meeting in Melbourne, 7-8 December
To: not specified <Recipients>
AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND DIGITAL ENCYCLOPEDIAS GROUP (ANZDEG)
2006 WORKSHOP
THE UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE
7 – 8 DECEMBER, 2006
Hello all,
The next meeting of ANZDEG will be taking place on Thursday 7th and
Friday 8th December, in Melbourne.
In the next few weeks, you'll be given more details about the program
and venue. What we'd like from you is an expression of interest if
you're planning on coming to Melbourne, and some input about potential
workshop topics for the meeting. What are you working on? What
problems are you currently confronting? Would you be interested in
giving a short demonstration/presentation of your project?
The meeting will be an opportunity for people working in the area of
online encyclopedias, dictionaries and atlases, and other projects to
showcase their recent work, to raise thorny issues and challenges and
to learn about latest developments.
The format will be similar to the 2005 meeting in Wellington, where a
number of small, informal workshop sessions will be held over two
days.
We are currently finalising the program, but we're still keen to hear
from you about the sorts of topics you'd like to discuss at this
year's meeting. Some recent suggestions we've had are:
An inside view of wikipedia
Creative commons
Topic maps
Authority files
If you have any suggestions for us, or you're ready to put your hand
up to present a workshop, please let us know.
You can email Cate Elkner (cjelkner(a)unimelb.edu.au) to express your
interest in attending the meeting, or with your workshop ideas. Stay
tuned for more information in the next few weeks.
Kind regards,
Cate Elkner, for the organising committee: Andy Brown-May, Gavan
McCarthy, Jonathan O'Donnell

Hello,
There was some recent data collected about wikipedia edits that might
have escaped your notice. (If you're not on way-too-many WP mailing
lists like me. :))
4.4% of edits to the English Wikipedia are from Australian IPs. This
is the fourth largest distinct country after the US (52.1%), Great
Britain (15.9%) and Canada (7.3%).
Of edits from Australian IPs, 90% are made to the English Wikipedia,
8% to the Polish Wikipedia, and 2% to all other Wikipedias combined.
From: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Edits_by_wikipedia_edition_and_country_of_or…
There are some key figures missing, like if the percentages include
other Wikimedia wikis or just Wikipedias (I think it's the latter),
but it seems like a good guide. It was collected from 30 days' worth
of RC data.
Is anyone else really surprised at that 8% Polish Wikipedia figure?!
cheers,
Brianna
