I've been entertaining myself this week with audio recordings of some
of the proceedings Wikimania on my iPod, I'm sure that some of you may
have seen them too.
Anyway, an Australian bid for Wikimania 2007 was mooted some time ago,
and not much has happened, although over the weekend I was jealous
that I wasn't in Boston, so I did a little brainstorming and some
brief research about airfare prices and such (it's all at
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wikimania_2007/Australia).
I think it would be absolutely fantastic for Australia to host
Wikimania; what do other people think? It would be much more feasible
for people from Asia to attend, and although there has been some
suggestion of, say India hosting next year's event, there's been some
doubts about whether their community is organised enough to manage it,
whereas there's a very strong community here.
So what do we think?

Hi all,
I have been working today and have noticed that the NSW Department of
Education and Training have listed Wikipedia on their High School student's
portal (I will try to get some screenshots if it is allowed).
Basically, when a student logs into the DET website they are given a landing
page. On this page are some useful links. I was surprised to see Wikipedia
third from the top, especially given the discontent with Wikipedia usage at
the lower ends of the ranks!
Just thought I'd share this with you all,
Cheers,
Nathan.
Hi all,
Given that emails are vastly more accessible than watchlists (well, in
my mind they are!), and it's not particularly easy to organise meetups
(unless your name is Angela ;) ), would anyone object if we a) invited
more Australian Wikimedians to this list and b) used this list for
organising meetups?

I've been listening to Anthere's presentation from Wikimania, and what
her experiences of the Foundation have been.
A few things have come to mind:
1. Does Wikimedia Australia have a mission statement, or are we getting
bogged down in the wording of the constitution (IANAL);
2. What plans do we have in place to encourage diversity amongst
projects? Is Wikimedia AU going to end up being "English Wikipedia
Australia"? Are there many contributors to other projects (Wikisource,
Wikibooks, Wiktionary)?
3. How will an Australian chapter tie in with the rest of the Foundation?
I hope that these don't sound like dumb questions, but even if they have
already been answered, are we sure that we're answering them in the
right way?

If anyone would like to attend an event at The Churchill Club in
Melbourne where I'll be talking about "Future Directions for Free
Content", please let me know since I have 5 free tickets (they're
usually $66). It'll be held on the evening of August 31st.
Angela.
