Hey,
Here is Wikimedia Israel report for June 2013:
*
*
*Fifth Wikipedia Academy Conference *
The fifth Wikipedia Academy conference in Israel was held on June 2, 2013
in the Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya. The central theme of this year's
conference, which attracted an audience of 150—among them Wikipedians,
members of the academia and the business world—was "*Why are there fewer
women editors on Wikipedia*".
We were honored to welcome the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees
member *Bishakha Datta* , as our keynote speaker. We also had a women's
panel with some of our Wikipedia Israel community members, and several
professional researchers.

Wikimedia Israel Survey
On June 2013, Wikimedia Israel conducted a survey, according to which 23%
of Israeli Wikipedians are women (compared to 10–15% in other parts of the
world), 57% of Wikipedians are single and have a bachelor's or master's
degree, 15% are under the age of 15 and 5% are over 60. Only 29% of the
editors said they wrote new articles; the others engaged in adding content
to existing articles, correcting mistakes and adding media.
You will find the exact statistics on this press
release<http://www.wikimedia.org.il/%D7%A0%D7%AA%D7%95%D7%A0%D7%99-%D7%A1%D7%A7%D7%…>

Program activities *
*GLAM*
- On June 13, Wikimedia Israel celebrated the Hebrew Book Week in a
joint event with the National Library in Jerusalem. The event, run by
Wikimedia Israel volunteers, began with an editing workshop for librarians
and other library employees. It continued with a "behind-the-scenes" tour
at the library’s ancient text archives, where we learned about the various
collections and about the historical value of the library. The tour was
open to both Wikipedians and the general public. After the tour we gave a
lecture about Wikipedia to the general public, while wikipedians were
engaged in an edit-a-thon. The event marked the beginning of a second pilot
project with the NLI, which includes a "Wikipedian-in-Residence" Program
for 6 months.
- On June 24, a presentation about GLAM-Wiki, focusing on collaboration
with Libraries, was given to about 20 librarians from central Israel.
*Africa Center Project*
- On June 23, a lecture and editing workshop was held in the Ben-Gurion
University (BGU) in partnership with the university’s Africa Center.
Eighteen BGU students will travel to Ghana in the coming month and will be
installing an offline copy of Wikipedia there.
*
*
*Lectures and Academic Partnerships*
- A new partnership with the Faculty of Biblical and Jewish Studies at
the Bar-Ilan University has started and on June 13th, an editing workshop
was held for the students of the" "Lamentation in the Bible" course. The
partnership will involve students writing Wikipedia articles as a mandatory
course assignment. It was the first the "Education Extension" was used in
an academic course in Israel.
- In addition, a “What is Wikipedia” talk was given at the Department of
Molecular Biology in the Ariel University. The talk was attended by about
70 students, researchers and faculty.

Hi all,
the new bulletin from Wikimedia Italia (#56) is available. This time
we write about Archeowiki ("Archaeowiki", a collaboration between WMIT
and archaeologist), an Italian lawsuit that WMF won, the upcoming
GfOSS conference and a series of courses on Wikipedia for librarians
(and interested users).
As usual a link has been added to meta, at
Wikimedia_chapters/Reports/Wikimedia_Italia ; more-or-less raw text of
the bulletin follows below.
ciao, .mau.

Museums, schools, archeology and Wikipedia: project
Archaeowiki is almost ready to meet its
public. Our Wikipedians in residence (Jaqen,
Yiyi and Phyrexian) are
working side by side with the archaeologists of
[http://www.archeoambrosiano.org/ G.A.AM - Ambrosian Archaeological
Group Ambrosian] for the preparation of meetings and activities aimed
at the development and documentation of the collections housed from
six museums in Lombardia. The project is based on teaching moments
combined with guided tours ("wikigite") in museums, showing the public
and institutions the wiki way to see the culture.
Two types of wikigite are provided:
*Wikigita goes to school is dedicated to students of
secondary schools of first and second level and will start this fall.
Students will have the opportunity to know the archaeological heritage
in Lombardia and learn how to share it on Wikipedia. Once in the
classroom, in fact, teachers will guide pupils in loading the material
collected during the trip: photos to Commons and information to
Wikipedia.
*Wikigita comes to you is aimed instead at a different
segment of the population that is not often found in the audience of
museums: elderly and the disabled, especially blind people. With the
involvement of specific associations, introductory meetings to
Wikipedia will be organized; after them, guided tours in museums and
theme-based editathons will follow.
More information will soon be available in an overview post featured
in the Wikimedia Foundation blog. We eill inform you as soon as it
will appear.
Wikimedia Foundation wins a lawsuit versus Cesare Previti
On January 30, 2013 Cesare Previti, a former adviser to Silvio
Berlusconi, has filed a lawsuit against the Wikimedia Foundation,
arguing that the article about him posted on
Wikipedia Italian is inaccurate and defamatory and that, the WMF was
therefore responsible for having provided a place to spread that
content.
On 20 June 2013, the Court of Rome
has expressed its opposition, noting that the Wikimedia Foundation is
offering only a hosting service, cannot be responsible for everything
that is written by individual users and, moreover, that given the open
and fluid nature of the projects, these aspects are explained very
clearly.
In addition to the legal victory, it is significant that the judgment
will rest in part on what is one of the cornerstones of Wikipedia:
anyone can edit entries or to report inaccuracies to the community of
volunteers. Consequently, according to the Court of Rome, Cesare
Previti could advance their grievances directly to the community,
which plays the main role in creating and managing content.
GfOSS Day
GfOSS, the Italian Association for free
geographic information, announced that from 10 to 11 October this year
the sixth edition of [http://www.gfoss.it/drupal/gfossday2013 GFOSS
Day will be held in Bologna.
Purpose of the conference is to involve businesses, government
agencies, developers, citizens, industry and fans of the themes of
free software and open geographic data. The event is organized in
collaboration with the Regione Emilia Romagna and received the
patronage of [http://www.eng.dicam.unibo.it/ Department of Civil,
Chemical, Environmental and Materials Engineering - DICAM] and
[http://www.scienzeagrarie.unibo.it/ Department of Agricultural
Sciences - DIPSA] of the University of Bologna.
The event will be open to all and free of charge.
The organizers asked us to write about it now, since the
organizational machine is just gearing up, the program is still being
developed and therefore there is room to send ideas and proposals.
Future appointments
Between June and September, during
Bibliopride2013, the Tuscany Section of AIB (Italian Libraries'
Association) organizes
four Wikipedia courses for librarians and users: Pisa (16-17 July),
Florence (23-24 July) , Grosseto (16-17 September); Scandicci (23-24
September). The courses are designed to collect updated and quality
information about the libraries. Registration is required and must be
made at least three days prior to the course by writing an e-mail to
tos-corsi(a)tos.aib.it. At the end of the course a certificate of
participation will be issued: those who will answer correctly the
exercises will receive an additional certification. Lecturer will be
[:it:Utente:Giaccai|Susanna Giaccai] with the collaboration of some

COMMUNITY: supporting and mobilising volunteers and editors
-
World War I Editathon
As part of an international initiative focussing on Wikipedia coverage of
the First World War, a small editathon took place in Museum Huis Doorn on
June 29. Only a few people attended, reflecting the limited interest in
World War I in the Netherlands. The event however could be the basis for
stronger cooperation with Museum Huis Doorn in the future.
WORK: content, collaboration and activity development
-
Behind the scenes at the National Library and National Archives
On 8 June 2013 the Koninklijke Bibliotheek and Nationaal Archief of the
Netherlands were open for Wikipedians for a tour behind the scenes. More
than 30 people came to learn more about the work and collections of KB and
NA. Experts from both organisations presented examples of outreach using
open data from the public collections, outlined future developments and
invited collaboration with the Wikimedia community. Overall aim is to add
to and improve content on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects by
making use of the collections of Archives and Library. The presentations
given by staff are online at wmnl:Backstage event KB & NA
8-6-2013<http://nl.wikimedia.org/wiki/Backstage_event_KB_%26_NA_8-6-2013>(in
Dutch).
-
Meetings and potential new partners.
There have been talks with several new potential partners in The
Netherlands which may lead to new cooperation activities in the future.

WMNL: participation and supportNew website
First steps were made towards improving the WMNL website, which will focus
especially on providing information about WMNL activities for the wider
public. The revamped website will also have better interactive options and
will make it easier to sign up for events.
RESOURCES: Strong and sustainable financial position
-
Funding request granted
WMNL submitted a request for funding to the Fonds 1818 for activities in
the city The Hague within the framework of Wiki Loves Monuments. The
request was granted, enabling WMNL to organise an editathon, a photo-hunt
and other activities focussing on the historical monuments of The Hague.
-
Survey among donors
A small survey among people who gave money directly to WMNL showed that
they generally have a positive impression of WMNL and are inclined to give
money again. They would like to be informed more frequently about
developments and activities.
GLOBAL: International collaboration
-
WCA
WCAC Member Ziko van Dijk took part in the WCA phone conference on June 16.
ORGANISATION: board, management and support
-
Changes in division of roles within Board
On 6 June the board met in Utrecht. Secretary Paul Becherer became the new
treasurer, and Frans Grijzenhout the new secretary. Ad Huikeshoven, the
former treasurer, took over other tasks such as the Wikipedia-Dag (the
former Wikimedia Conference Nederland).
-

Dear Wikimedians,

Edit-a-thon in the Legislative Palace =
On Saturday, June 29, we held the First Legislative Edit-a-thon, the second
editing marathon in Buenos Aires, organized jointly with the Buenos Aires
City Legislature. It focused on the history and architecture of the
Legislative Palace.
In this opportunity we welcomed people that were editing for the first
time; amongst them, Elizabeth Kries, who had taken part as a young
architect in the team that refurbished the palace in the 1970s. The
activity started at 4 pm with a tour through the Palace that described the
most important historic events, as well as its architectural features and
basic aspects of the legislative process. Two new articles were created,
one about the Esteban Echeverría Library and another one about the historic
Buenos Aires City Council. On top of that, the articles about the City
Legislature, its Palace and the City's coat of arms were substantially
modified.
The event, which brought together over 30 people, was developed as part of
the collaboration started with the City Legislature months ago, which also
included the donation of 85 images of the historic building that were
uploaded to Commons. In the mid-term, we hope that this framework brings
new projects to the local community, as well as new books and documents
with a Creative Commons licence, that are being digitalized by the staff in
the Esteban Echeverría Library.
Wikimemory in Rosario
On June 6 and 7 we organized, together with the Free Faculty of Rosario,
the event “Wikimemory”, where 30 high school students from the “Soldados
Argentinos” School in Rosario took part of the editing workshop. They where
unaware of the editing option in Wikipedia before the event.
During the first day, Osmar Valdebenito and Nicolás Georgetti made an
introduction to the students about Wikipedia, the Wikimedia projects, and
how the community works to improve the contents on the free encyclopedia.
Some tests were carried out in the classroom, and during the second day,
the students visited the Museum of Memory in Rosario. They decided together
the new articles to create and divided into groups to take pictures, gather
information and upload everything onto the web. On the whole, it was a very
successful experience.
In this opportuniy, we also worked with an audience that does not
frequently attend our events: Susana Correa made a presentation for old
people. It versed on the age group difficulties to access new technologies
and the use of Wikipedia. Ten people attended the event, who regularly take
part in the seminars of the Free Faculty. Meanwhile, Osmar and Nicolás gave
an interview for the TV show “Juntos a la par”, produced by the Argentinean
Work Union of Independent Teachers, and it was broadcasted in Rosario’s
regional channel.
La exhibición de Wiki Loves Monuments en la Casa de la Cultura de Buenos
Aires.
Wiki Loves Monuments exhibition
On June 4th we held the award ceremony of Wiki Loves Monuments 2012, the
first Argentinean edition of the biggest photo contest in the world. The
event took place at the Buenos Aires House of Culture, and it was also the
scene to officially announce the launching of the 2013 edition of the
competition. At the end of the 2012 contest, 6,001 images were uploaded to
Wikimedia Commons from 445 participants; of the 1.881 monuments listed, 793
of them were photographed for the contest, representing 42,2%, so there are
opportunities to grow for 2013.
Also, there was an exhibition in the same place until June 17 of the 10
winning photos from the Argentinean edition, together with the first prize
of the global edition. We expect to organize more exhibitions in the coming
months in other places in Argentina.
GLAM Congress in La Rioja
The IV Conference of Archives, Museums and Libraries in La Rioja was
organized by the National University of La Rioja (UNLaR). Osmar Valdebenito
made a presentation called “From shelves to Wikipedia: How to reach
millions of people from our libraries?”, that showed the impact Wikipedia
has as a source, being as it is the 5th most visited website in the world.
This time, Osmar highlighted the importance of encouraging local
communities in the provinces of Argentina to spread their patrimony. The
main objetctive is to break the current paradigm in which knowledge, in the
national sphere, is generated in Buenos Aires.
This event, which took place on May 13 and 14, was developed within
Wikimedia Argentina’s program to approach cultural institutions. It was our
first official activity in the Northwest of Argentina.
Gender-gap in Córdoba
The workshop “Editing the gender gap in Wikipedia” was held on two
different days this time: June 14 and June 28, organized jointly with the
Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities of the National University in Córdoba,
as part of the cooperation framework signed with that institution.
The workshop, coordinated by Lila Pagola and Rayentrey Tappa, was attended
by 17 people on the first meeting, which lasted for three hours, and 11
people on the second meeting, which lasted for six hours. None of the
participants had edited Wikipedia before, hence, the experience was also a
chance for dialogue about what is the free encyclopedia and the principles
in which it is inspired.
Wikipedia in General Belgrano
On Wednesday, June 26, we gave a workshop to 4th year students of the Nº 1
High School of General Belgrano (province of Buenos Aires). We adressed the
questions waht Wikipedia is and how to edit it, with the aim of organizing
an edit-a-thon with them in the near future. The audience, mainly secondary
students, was very enthusiastic about collaborating in the Free
Encyclopedia.
In this opportunity we discussed together the meaning of Wikipedia and its
relevance within a community. Our mid-term goal is to organize an
edit-a-thon about the city of General Belgrano and its history, together
with the local Museum of History “Alfredo Enrique Múlgura”. The event
intended to generate a real interest in young people to write about their
own city. The activity was very highly appreciated by the authorities of
the high school.
