*25.08.2011: Received official notification from FICOD: Wikimedia España
has been selected as content collaborator for FICOD 2011.
*31.08.2011: Official press release of Wiki Loves Monuments contest in

*31.08.2011: Events created in Facebook and Tuenti for Wiki Loves
Monuments contest in Spain. 618 people contacted in total the first day,
80 confirming participation.

stats: 168,555 pics submitted for the European contest, of which 17,167
are from Spanish monuments submitted via WMES contest (10.18%). Wikilm.es

Web stats 15-30 September: 83927 visitors. Since September 8: 102,456
Visits, 214,965 Pageviews, 168,679 Unique Pageviews, 94,833 people visited

Here is our activity report for September 2011.
== IDF Spokesperson releases images under CC-BY-SA license ==
The spokesperson unit of the Israel Defense Forces began publishing its
photographs online (on its Flickr account) under a free Creative Commons
license. This move follows a long and protracted process of legislation
promoted by WMIL in discussions in the Science and Technology Committee of
the Knesset, the Israeli parliament. While legislation meant to free any
work created by the Israeli government of copyright has not yet been
accepted, the move by the IDF is certainly motivated by it. Hundreds of IDF
Spokesperson images are now in use on Wikimedia projects. WMIL released a
widely circulated press release condoning the move by the IDF spokesperson.

== Wikimedian-in-Residence in Israel Museum, Jerusalem ==
On September 18th, Yair Talmor became the first ever Wikimedian-in-Residence
in the Israel Museum and in Israel in general. Talmor, an art teacher with
academic background in art, will be employed for a two months period at the
museum, concentrating on tutoring museum staff on wiki editing, organizing
events of public outreach such as editathons and backstage tours, uploading
material from the museum's library and enhancing Wikipedia articles about
prominent Israeli artists. His employment is funded in part by WMIL.
While the focus of the project is in Hebrew, there's also some work on
material in English.

== Haifa University Faculty of the Humanities ==
On September 22nd, a large meeting was held at Haifa University between
members of staff from the Faculty of the Humanities and volunteers from
Wikimedia Israel. This was a preparatory session for a large-scale project
in which students in various courses will write Wikipedia articles as part
of their academic assignments.
== Training of Haifa Linux club ==
On September 12th, Tomer Ashur gave a hands-on training session on Wikipedia
editing to members of Haifa Linux club (Haifux). Eight people took part and
five articles were written during the training session.
== Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs ==
WMIL representatives met with a Deputy Director of the Israeli Ministry of
Foreign Affairs. They are very interested in releasing some of their
material under free licenses and in receiving further training from WMIL
about Wikipedia editing. A training session is planned for October 5th.
== Israeli Ministry of Education ==
Tomer Ashur, Deror Lin and Amir Aharoni met with the people responsible for
Internet ethics and safety education in the Ministry of Education to start
planning one-time experimental classes for elementary school pupils that
will teach them to understand Wikipedia's background, to read it correctly
and to understand the right conduct on talk pages. The lessons are scheduled
for November and chapter members are preparing the detailed lesson plans.
== Photoshooting excursion in Haifa ==
As part of the "Elef Milim" project about 20 Wikimedians took part in an
educational excursion in Haifa.

== Thank-you event for Wikimania volunteers ==
A thank-you picnic was held for the many volunteers that helped us make
Wikimania 2011 succssful. The event was attended by about 50 volunteers.
== Board Meeting ==
The WMIL board met on September 13th in Ramat Gan. The Board approved and
signed the Chapter's Agreement with the Foundation and decided to raise a
few more questions about the Grants Agreement. The Board also approved the
2012 workplan with a couple of minor items on the plan reserved for future
discussion. The workplan will be posted shortly on Meta.

*Stanton Foundation Awards Wikimedia $3.6 Million for Technology
Improvements*
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – October 5, 2011 – The Wikimedia Foundation announced
today it has been awarded the largest-ever grant in its history: $3.6
million from the Stanton Foundation. The purpose of the grant is to fund
major investments in the technology infrastructure that supports Wikipedia
and its sister projects, in order to successfully serve their growing
readership. The Wikimedia projects currently reach more than 422 million
unique visitors around the world every month (comScore, August 2011), making
Wikipedia the fifth most-popular website in the world.
The grant will fund development of a new editing interface that will make it
possible for people to easily edit Wikipedia without needing to learn
special wiki syntax. It will also support development of new technical
features to make Wikimedia a friendlier and more understandable environment
for new editors, and an improved mobile experience for readers and editors.
"The Stanton Foundation is a long-time funder of the Wikimedia Foundation,
and I am thrilled they're increasing their investment in us," said Sue
Gardner, Executive Director of the Wikimedia Foundation. "The Stanton
Foundation was one of the first institutions to recognize that Wikipedia is
a serious educational endeavor that's having a significant impact on people
around the world. I will always be grateful to them for taking a risk in
first funding us, many years ago."
The Stanton Foundation is the foundation created by the American
broadcasting executive and media pioneer Frank Stanton, who, in 1960,
organized the first-ever televised presidential debate. Among its previous
grants to the Wikimedia Foundation, the Stanton Foundation provided $1.2
million in 2010 for the Wikipedia Public Policy Initiative, a program
designed to improve the quality and quantity of information related to
public policy topics in Wikipedia. The project resulted in 800 American
students at universities such as Harvard and University of California
Berkeley adding the equivalent of 5,800 printed pages of material to
Wikipedia, and has now been expanded to include universities in Canada and
India.

* The Oriya Wiktionary (wt/or) has been re-opened. It is the first
time that a closed wiki is unlocked. Though the requirements were not
met, it was approved because there will be a workshop in Bhubaneswar,
India where the Oriya projects will be promoted and because re-opening
a wiki is easy.
* The Northern Sotho Wikipedia (wp/nso) has been approved, but waiting
for creation (bug 30882).
* The Lezgi Wikipedia (wp/lez) and Tachelhit Wikipedia (wp/shi) can be
approved if someone who can verify the content is found.

* The language code "als" (assigned to Tosk Albanian) is misused by
Alemannic [gsw]. The als.wikipedia.org should be moved (see bug
23215), but User:Terfili submitted an ISO 639-3 change request to
create an Alemannic macrolanguage "aeg" including the current code
"gsw". If that passes, the wiki would likely be moved to
aeg.wikipedia.org. Change request:
