In honor of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month,
Kundiman and Wikimedia NYC are teaming up for another weeklong Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon focusing on Asian American literature. Since 2018, Kundiman and Wikimedia NYC and DC have partnered to address the erasure of Asian American writers online. With the help of our communities, we have collectively added over 80,000 words on Asian American literature to Wikipedia. Though Wikipedia is a widely-used global resource, the second most popular website in the U.S., it is predominantly edited by white men, and that imbalance shows in its expertise. Creating and adding to articles on Wikipedia is a way for the community to come together to demonstrate literary activism and to increase the visibility of Asian American writers online.
There is no experience required, and Wikipedia newbies are encouraged! We will offer three free online trainings via Zoom throughout the week. Join us at any time to pitch in during #KundimanWikiWeek!
Here’s how to join us this week:
- Sign up here! You can register for a free Wikipedia training on Zoom, or let us know that you don’t need to attend a training, but will be editing with us. After you sign up, we’ll be sending you an e-mail with more detailed instructions for the week. If you don’t have time to attend a training, you can take a look at Kundiman's Wikipedia Editing Guide. However, we encourage you to attend a training, as they are fun, simple, and much easier to learn from!
- Join our Wikipedia team. This helps us track everyone who has edited with us this week and see how many pages we add to and create! (When creating an account, we recommend choosing a username that is personal to you, but doesn't personally identify you, as edits are tied to your username.)
- Join the Kundiman + Wikimedia Slack channel so you can ask questions at any time during the week. Just click the above link, enter in your email, and click on the #kundiman channel on the left sidebar!
- Share your progress on social media using the hashtag #KundimanWikiWeek or let us know what you’ve edited by e-mailing info@kundiman.org. We’d love to compile our collective edits for a recap.
Trainings will be held on zoom at:
- Sunday, May 23rd: 1 PM–2PM ET
- Tuesday, May 25th: 3 PM–4PM ET
- Wednesday, May 26th: 6:30 PM–7:30 PM ET
