Hi everybody,
The next Wikimedians of North Carolina meetup is this Tuesday, February 11 at 7pm ET on Zoom [1]. We’ll be taking notes on Etherpad [2] and later copying them into Monthly Meeting page for long-term storage [3]. I don’t have any major agenda items yet (thankfully our annual report period ends in April, so we have a few months to go) apart from a debrief of the December editathon, but please add anything to the meeting notes you’d like to discuss [1].
See you on Tuesday!
cheers, Gaurav

Gaurav,
Hi, I've been getting acquainted with WikiData, in anticipation of attending some of the events of Data Reuse Days https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Event:Data_Reuse_Days_2025 . Personally, I think I'm more interested in contributing to WikiData than reusing, but you never know how things will go. I'd be particularly interested in data reuse opportunities focused on low income communities in North America and Latin America.
Anyway, it occurred to me that our group might consider either creating a WikiProject around WikiData, or adding a WikiData component to the existing WikiProject North Carolina https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_North_Carolina. My perspective would be to focus on improving the data for cities and counties in North Carolina (for example, contrast the data record for Boston https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q100 vs Raleigh https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q41087). Some nice things about this as a project idea is that you can dip into it from various perspectives like history, geography, images, social media, etc. as an intro to WikiData, or you can also take a more advanced approach to uploading data for multiple cities and counties. There is an ongoing WikiProject around data standards for Cities and Towns https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikiProject_Cities_and_Towns that could also be a connection.
This might potentially play into the grant opportunity you mentioned, too.
I have to say I'm not considering making this a super-intense project. Personally I don't have much interest in managing budget, either. But something I found when leading Code with the Carolinas was that having some low-intensity background projects can really contribute to the organization's sustainability, in that you always have something to meet about and don't get bogged down in talking about what to do next.
I'd also be up for some discussions of how Wikipedia has been in the news lately.
Yours,
Jennifer

Hi Jennifer,
Thanks for talking about this at today’s North Carolina Wikimedians meetup! Something I hadn’t realized was that there Data Reuse Days is next week from Tuesday, February 18 until the following Friday, February 28 [1], with daily sessions that cover everything from the Wikidata APIs to authority files to WikiFlix. I don’t think I’ll have time to attend all the sessions, but I’ll see if I can attend some of them — if I do, I can debrief on them at our next meeting in March.
cheers, Gaurav

Gaurav,
Excellent plan!
Something I realized after the call is that we might tie together some of the ideas we discussed by doing an edit-a-thon with the ECU students (once they're up and running) focused on the WikiPix photos in Eastern North Carolina. This could be online or hybrid, or we could write up what we did as a "kit" for an in-person event.
Yours,
Jennifer

Hi,
With our next meeting coming up next week, I added two items to the agenda on the Etherpad https://etherpad.wikimedia.org/p/North_Carolina_Wikipedians#L21
First, some updates on potential North Carolina/WikiData focused projects:
Second, the question of whether we want to promote some of our events to audiences beyond Wikipedia, and some free options for doing that.
Looking forward to discussing with you all further. We have a Notetaker signed up (thanks, James). Do we have a volunteer to facilitate?
Yours,
Jennifer

Thanks so much, Jennifer! I don’t think we have a volunteer to facilitate, but I can do it at a pinch. I’ll probably need to miss the April meeting, so we definitely need someone to volunteer for that one.
There’s a few things I wanted to let everybody know about — I’ll put it in this e-mail, and then bring it up again at next week’s meeting: - If you’d like to apply for a scholarship to attend WikiConference North America from October 16-19, 2025, the deadline is on April 4 [1] - I haven’t gotten in touch with the Duke Lemur Center yet, but I did find out that they have free open house on the last Saturday of every month, which could be a fun thing to connect an in-person meeting with [2] - You might have seen ads for “Celebrate Women”, a campaign to close the gender gap in Wikipedia projects going on in March [3] - The Wiki Loves Folklore International Photography Contest will end on March 31 [4]
See y’all on Tuesday!
cheers, Gaurav

Frank,
Interesting idea! This category exists, with almost 600,000 images.
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:PD_US_Government
So maybe all/ some of the images are already there and could be tagged. Anyone have good technical ideas about comparing the databases? Also, I can see where it says AP published the database of photos, but haven’t been able to find that link. Is this just me being pre-coffee on Daylight Savings Time Day?
This page exists about 2025 resource removals more broadly

Thanks so much, Jennifer! I don’t think we have a volunteer to facilitate, but I can do it at a pinch. I’ll probably need to miss the April meeting, so we definitely need someone to volunteer for that one.
There’s a few things I wanted to let everybody know about — I’ll put it in this e-mail, and then bring it up again at next week’s meeting:
- If you’d like to apply for a scholarship to attend WikiConference North
America from October 16-19, 2025, the deadline is on April 4 [1]
- I haven’t gotten in touch with the Duke Lemur Center yet, but I did
find out that they have free open house on the last Saturday of every month, which could be a fun thing to connect an in-person meeting with [2]
- You might have seen ads for “Celebrate Women”, a campaign to close the
gender gap in Wikipedia projects going on in March [3]
- The Wiki Loves Folklore International Photography Contest will end on
March 31 [4]
See y’all on Tuesday!
cheers, Gaurav

Hi,
With our next meeting coming up next week, I added two items to the agenda on the Etherpad https://etherpad.wikimedia.org/p/North_Carolina_Wikipedians#L21
Yours,
Jennifer

Gaurav,
Excellent plan!

Gaurav,
Hi, I've been getting acquainted with WikiData, in anticipation of attending some of the events of Data Reuse Days https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Event:Data_Reuse_Days_2025 .
Yours,
Jennifer

Hi everybody,
The next Wikimedians of North Carolina meetup is this Tuesday, February 11 at 7pm ET on Zoom [1]. We’ll be taking notes on Etherpad [2] and later copying them into Monthly Meeting page for long-term storage [3]. I don’t have any major agenda items yet (thankfully our annual report period ends in April, so we have a few months to go) apart from a debrief of the December editathon, but please add anything to the meeting notes you’d like to discuss [1].
See you on Tuesday!
cheers, Gaurav
