Hi everybody,
I’ve drafted a message [1] we could send to every Wikipedia user who has ever signed up on our user group page. Please have a look at this message, edit it with any improvements, and let me know if it looks good to you! I’m hoping to send it out by Tuesday, but if enough people review it by tomorrow we could send it out tomorrow night itself. As far as I know, nobody in our group has the massmessage user right, so we’ll need to ask an Administrator to send it for us — but that also means another pair of eyes to make sure we didn’t mess something up, so that’s nice. I wanted to keep the message short, but we might want to include a sentence telling people about this new distribution list as well — what do you think?
To do this, I created a Global Message delivery list for our group [2] that includes every username listed on our Participants and Supporters list [3]. There are a few other places we could use to add usernames to this list:
- People who have attended events in North Carolina [4]
- People who have listed an interest in local WikiProjects, such as WikiProject North Carolina [5] or WikiProject Durham [6]
Do you think we should add those users to our distribution list before sending out this global message? I think so, but I’m happy to wait until our next monthly meeting (Tues, July 8) and discuss this in person before making that change.
cheers,
Gaurav

Hi Crystal,
Thanks so much for this exciting update! I’ll need to check whether I can make it to Charlotte that day, but I will certainly try. I’m also CCing this to our mailing list to see if any of our other members can make it to the event.
A physical signup sheet sounds like a great idea! I think showing a QR code that takes people to our mailing list website [1] during the presentation would be really helpful in making it easy for anybody at the event to get in touch with us afterwards. Having one of us speak at the event would of course be perfect — hopefully we’ll know who can make it to the event pretty soon!
Please let us know how we can help get the word out about this event. We’re working to set up a mass message to the participants and supporters on our user group page [2] and I assume you’ll be setting up site notices, but if there’s anything else we can do to help, please let us know!
Cheers,
Gaurav

The North Carolina Wikipedians will next be meeting on Tuesday, May 13, 2025 at 7pm ET — we could discuss this with everybody then, or we could meet on one of the next two Tuesdays (April 22 or 29) at the same time and see how many people we could get. What would you prefer? I think a meeting focussed just on Wikicurious on April 29 before discussing it with the full group on May 13 makes the most sense to me, but whatever works for you will be fine.

Hi everybody,
Thanks to everybody who came to today’s North Carolina Wikipedians monthly meetup! Some action items and follow-ups:
- I’ve moved our meeting notes to the Meta Wikipedia [1] — please have a look and correct any mistakes I've made!
- Thanks again to Bill Adair for talking to us about his planned book! I’ve CCed him on this e-mail, so feel free to reach out to him directly if you’d like to be interviewed for his project, or if you have suggestions on people or resources he should check out.
- Please have a look at the draft annual report for our group [2] — please make any edits or let me know if there’s anything I should fix. I’ll submit it this Friday unless any of you tell me not to.
- WikiCurious is hosting an event at the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art in Charlotte, North Carolina on Wed, July 2 from 5-8pm [3] — I’ll forward an e-mail from the organizers soon, but it sounds like a really fun event!
- We came up with a name for our core team ("Core Team") and chose the first three Core members (Jennifer, James and me — plus Richard as an official external supporter). We think the criteria for being on the Core team should be that you have attended at least one monthly meeting in the last year, but that might change in the feature. I’ve created a barebones page at [4], and we’ll need to come up with how this Core team is going to work in the coming months. Please feel free to edit and improve the barebones page — we can discuss all the changes at our next meeting!
- Jennifer pointed out that the Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos contest [5] will be running from July 1 to August 31 and is looking for participating communities. I’ve added us to the list! We now need to following the Organizers Guide [6] and set up some pages to organize this effort within North Carolina.
I think our two big priorities for the next few weeks should be:
1. Trying to get out the word about the WikiCurious event in Charlotte — I’ll be looking into whether we can use the Mass Message sender system [7] to message the Participants and Supporters [8] on our Meta wiki page, and I assume they’ll be able to set up a CentralNotice. Is there anything else we can do to help people find out about this event? We could organize a meeting in the next few weeks to do this if necessary.
2. Starting the ball rolling on a Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos contest for North Carolina — should we focus on our WikiPix 2022 photos and try to put them into articles, come up with a list of North Carolina articles needing photographs, or something different? All ideas welcome!
See you at our next meeting on Tuesday, July 8 at 7pm ET!
cheers,
Gaurav

Hi everybody,
I’ve written up a draft annual report [1] for our group (from May 1, 2024 to April 30, 2025). This year, we have a new annual report format [2] and, er, it’s pretty long. Some of our answers are going to be better next year once we have a new governance model up and running, but I’d love everybody’s feedback on the answers I’ve put into the draft, what you think about it, and whether you have suggestions for better answers. As always, please feel free to edit the document directly — I’ll keep working on it as well. We can discuss it at this Tuesday’s meeting.
cheers,
Gaurav

Hi everybody!
Our next monthly meeting is scheduled for this Tuesday, June 10 from 7-8pm ET on Zoom [1]. We’ll be discussing the decision-making team proposal we started talking about last meeting (see Jennifer’s recent e-mail [3] or our meeting notes for a summary and discussion points). Once we’ve figured out that team, we can come up with our user group’s primary contacts, updated report format (which I can give an update on), and group “leaders” to put forward for the all-affiliates mailing list.
If there’s anything else you’d like to discuss, please add them to our agenda in Etherpad [2] or just reply to this e-mail. See you on Tuesday!
cheers,
Gaurav

Dear North Wikimedians UG,
We hope this message finds you well.
This is a kind reminder about the invitation to participate in the 6th
edition of the Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos (WPWP) Campaign, which runs
from July 1 to August 31, 2025.
As shared earlier, this global campaign encourages participants to add
relevant images from Wikimedia Commons to Wikipedia articles that currently
lack photos, helping to make Wikipedia articles more informative and
engaging. Since its inception in 2020, over 60 Wikimedia affiliates have
participated, contributing images to more than 400,000 articles across 245
Wikipedia languages.
We would love to see your community join us this year! As a local
organizer, you can:
- Encourage your members to participate by adding photos to Wikipedia
articles.
- Host edit-a-thons or training workshops to build capacity around
visual content.
- Coordinate community activities that improve Wikipedia's visual appeal.
📌 Eligibility reminder: Participants must have created their Wikimedia
account on or before July 1, 2024 to be eligible for the 2025 campaign.
If your community is interested in joining, we kindly ask you to:
- Reply to this email with your confirmation and a contact person, or
- Sign up directly via the WPWP 2025 Participating Communities page
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_Pages_Wanting_Photos_2025/Partici…>
.
Thank you for your continued contributions to the Wikimedia movement. We
look forward to your participation!
With warm regards,
