Hi, folks!
At the last meeting we discussed a potential new way to handle
decision-making and meeting tasks within our Wikimedia NC user group.
The idea is to create a core group that evenly distributes responsibility
for meeting roles and decision making. If we have 6 members of the core
group, each member would be responsible for taking a role at 4 meetings per
year. This core group would also make official decisions affecting the
group, such as taking on new projects, giving the go-ahead on events,
applying for grants, etc. Everyone would always still be welcome to attend
the meetings and to share their thoughts on proposals. This new approach
would just make it clearer who actually has the role of making the
decisions.
We've put time on the agenda
<https://etherpad.wikimedia.org/p/North_Carolina_Wikipedians#L29> next
month to discuss this proposal further.
Discussion points:
* What to call the group? Executive Committee? Core Team? Other ideas?
* How to handle point(s) of contact and accountability with Wikimedia?
* Incentives. In the past there were significant travel incentives for user
group leadership. Those specific incentives are unlikely to return, but
other incentives may be possible.
Note: if you're interested in being part of the core group but the specific
tasks of meeting minutes or facilitation don't work for you, we will be
happy to work with you to find another way you can contribute and
participate.
Yours,
Jennifer
Program proposals will be accepted until June 1, 2025.
cheers,
Gaurav

> Program submissions are now open for WikiConference North America (WCNA) 2025! This year’s conference will take place in New York City from October 16–19, 2025, under the theme “Wiki’s World Fair”— reflecting the rich cultural diversity of our community and the city of New York. We invite those interested to submit proposals for the conference particularly on topics related to: Credibility and online safety, the future of Wikipedia, and content gaps. As always, we welcome updates from around the community and all proposals will be given consideration regardless of topic. Program submissions will be open until June 1st, 2025. WCNA is a multi-lingual conference and we encourage participants to submit proposals for programming in Spanish and French as well. Translation services will be provided during the conference, and presenters are welcome to present in-person, or virtually. This year’s conference will be set up for hybrid participation and attendance. We look forward to seeing you in New York City, or online October 16-19

Hi everybody,
There’s a meeting tonight (8pm ET) to discuss a proposal for North America Hub funding [1] from the Wikimedia Foundation. The North American Hub is a collection of Wikipedia affiliates [2] who work in a coordinated way to apply for funding and make plans across the US, including the annual WikiConference North America [3] and the monthly NARWHAL meetings [4]. As you can see from the e-mail, they have until May 18 (this Sunday) to apply for funding to make small grants, improve Central Notice banners, and for management and office hours, and they’re looking for help in addressing the Hubs Team’s feedback [5]. I’m not going to be able to attend tonight’s meeting or help with proposal work this week, but if this is of interest to any of you and you have the time to contribute, I would encourage you to join the call tonight and see how you can help. Please let Richard (CC-ed) know if you have any questions about this process or if you have any difficulties joining the call.
Our next meeting will be tomorrow at 8pm ET, so we can also talk about this proposal then!
Cheers,
Gaurav

> We invite you to have input on what to propose in a meeting tomorrow (Monday) at 8pm eastern time.

> We rushed to submit a draft proposal that had three components: 60k$ for small grants, 20K$ to make it easier to send precise central notice banners, and 20K$ for management and office hours so we can connect better.
> That draft is here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Programs/Hub_Fund/North_American_Hub…
> There is substantive discussion on the talk page. The WMF asked us to think it through and document more then re-submit. The grant application is due on May 18th.
>
> Some of this planning has been informal/shambolic. Sorry! But we are serious about applying for funding. We’d like to get consensus and plan to the extent possible. One task in the coming year is to figure out what the hub governance is.

> The meeting is for representatives of user groups. Hand it off or invite someone else if that seems like the right thing to do.
> If for any reason you’d want to email or text me/us please do. You don’t have to read everything first.

Dear North Carolina Wikimedians UG,
We invite your community to participate in the 6th edition of the Wikipedia
Pages Wanting Photos Campaign
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_Pages_Wanting_Photos_2025>, a
global campaign taking place from July 1 to August 31, 2025.
Participants will choose among Wikipedia pages without photos, then add a
suitable photo from among the many thousands of photos in the Wikimedia
Commons, especially those uploaded from thematic contests (Wiki Loves
Africa, Wiki Loves Earth, Wiki Loves Folklore, etc.) over the years.
More than 60 Wikimedia affiliates have participated since the campaign was
launched in 2020 and have added images to more than 400,000 Wikipedia
articles in over 245 Wikipedia languages. Thanks to the volunteer
contributors!
We now invite your affiliate to organize and lead the campaign within your
community. As a local organizer, you may:
- Encourage individual members to take part by adding images to
Wikipedia articles.
- Host edit-a-thons focused on improving visual content.
- Organize training workshops to teach contributors how to correctly
integrate images into Wikipedia.
These activities will help build local capacity and increase visual content
across Wikipedia.
Please note that for participants to be eligible to participate in the
campaign, they need to have registered an account for at least a year
before the official start date of the contest. That is, for the 2025
edition, they must have registered an account on or before July 1, 2025.
The account can be from any Wikimedia project wikis.
The organizing team is looking for a contact person to coordinate WPWP
participation at the Wikimedia user group or chapter level (geographically
or thematically) or for a language Wikipedia.
We would be glad for you to reply to this email, or sign up directly at WPWP
Participating Communities
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_Pages_Wanting_Photos_2025/Partici…>
.
With kind regards,
User:Reading Beans
On behalf of the Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos campaign 2025.
Hi everybody!
Crystal Boceta and Pacita Rudder from Wikimedia NYC [1] would like to meet us to talk about the Wikicurious event series they have been organizing with sponsorship from Craig Newmark Philanthropies (see [2] for an example event from last September), and to discuss whether we’d like to organize an event together in June. They won’t be able to attend our next meeting in May, but I’ve set up an optional meeting next Tuesday, April 29 at 7pm ET on Zoom [3]. Anybody is welcome to join us!
We will still have our usual meeting next month on the second Tuesday of next month, May 13 at 7pm ET, where we can continue to discuss a Wikicurious event or any other meetings as we enter summer here in NC. If that time doesn't work for anybody, please let me know! Notetakers and facilitators welcome.
Cheers,
Gaurav
