Hi everybody!
I’ve set up a user group page at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Community_User_Group_Colorado, which I think of as a first step to setting up an official "Wikimedia Community User Group Colorado”. I pretty much only need two more things to fill out the application form at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Contact/affcomusergroup —
(1) An official description of the group: I’m going to go with the description at the top of the user group page, so please edit and improve it! (2) Three active Wikimedians as group leaders: please reply to the mailing list if you’re interested!
I’m happy to be a group leader during the setup phase, but it looks likely that I’m going to move out of Colorado this fall, so we’re going to need active leaders to keep the group going and to continue to organise events into the next year. You need to have at least 300 contributions on any Wikimedia project and have an account that’s older than six months old to be a group leader.
The main advantages of becoming an official user group are: (1) recognition by Wikimedia, so maybe increasing our profile with organization interested with working with Wikipedia in the area, (2) free Wikimedia merchandise for use in activities and outreach activities, and (3) one scholarship to attend the Wikimedia Conference in Berlin (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_user_groups#why). I know Buaidh has been thinking about setting up an official organization for our area for a while now, and I think this might be the best way to go about it!
cheers, Gaurav
Thanks, Gaurav! I'd be happy to be a group leader.

Gaurav,
Who told you that you were allowed to move out of here? :) We'll most certainly have to get together before you do, in any case.
I suppose I'm an active enough Wikimedian, and I'd love to have a group here, so I'd be willing to help out leading it.

If you don't want to be the third, I could do it, but you really should do it because you've actually set all this in motion and are a clearly a leader and stuff just based on that.
And look, we have three already! Well done, guys.

But let's keep brainstorming for a bit more….
Nice ideas! I like "Wikimedians of the Front Range”, "Wikimedians in
Colorado”, "Wikimedians of Colorado User Group” and "Colorado Users Group for Wikimedia”, in that in order.
Thanks for volunteering, Isarra! I don’t know if we can just enter
four names into the form. I’ll see!

I'm going to apply tomorrow (the form is at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Contact/affcomusergroup) under "Wikimedians in Colorado", since we currently have two votes for that (Neal + me) and it's already our mailing list name. The three names on the application form will be me, Neal and Todd, and I'll also add Isarra if I can. If you object to any of this or think of a better name, please let the list know in the next twenty-four hours, or forever hold your peace.

Gaurav,
Who told you that you were allowed to move out of here? :) We'll
most certainly have to get together before you do, in any case.
My PhD advisor did, that’s his job! :) I’m not leaving until
September, so there’s tons of time to do that — and I’ll definitely organise myself a Wikipedia meetup before I go!
I suppose I'm an active enough Wikimedian, and I'd love to have a
group here, so I'd be willing to help out leading it.
Yay! Could you please add your name to
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Community_User_Group_Colorado? It’d be nice to have as many people listed on there as possible!
Also: should we be “Wikimedia Community User Group Colorado” or
"Wikimedians of Colorado User Group”? Other suggestions for names welcome — the guidelines are up at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_user_groups/Name_guidelines#exampl... !
