Hello,

ONE HISTORICAL ITEM -- COULD SOMEONE include the OAKLAND INTERTRIBAL FRIENDSHIP HOUSE in your project for OAKLAND WIKI LOCAL HISTORY EDITATHON this Sunday, should no one else be there to do so.  I cannot attend.   I provided some information below, including some excepts that should provide for at least a basic post with a few related links.

I am unable to attend the Oakland Wiki local history editathon on Sunday.    I am unaware of a wikipage for the Intertribal Friendship House in Oakland California, also known as ifhurbanrez, Urban Rez.    It is a historical location in Oakland, of regional importance, in my opinion, to Native Americans.  The article below says Oakland Intertribal Friendship House, or Urban Rez,  is one of the oldest in the United States, and I believe it may be also the oldest in California.

I am NOT able to attend the Oakland Wiki local history editathon this Sunday, but would hope that some information may be included about the Oakland Intertribal Friendship House.

I have provided links for Oakland Intertribal Friendship House below and related websites including facebook and myspace.

I also included the text immediately below about local efforts to revitalize Native Language wherein Janeen Antione and perhaps others teach language class(es) at Oakland Intertribal Friendship house.

Janeen Antione teaches  at Oakland Intertribal Friendship House, as mentioned in this article   Native Americans work to revitalize California’s indigenous languages
http://oaklandnorth.net/2012/07/23/native-americans-work-to-revitalize-californias-indigenous-languages/    An excerpt from the above article:
"California was once home to over 300 Native American dialects and as many as 90 languages, making it the most linguistically diverse state in the US. Today, only about half of those languages are still with us, according to the Advocates for Indigenous California Language Survival, or AICLS.

“Many of the California tribes were really negatively impacted with the Gold Rush and tribes were devastated and a lot of the languages have been lost,” said Janeen Antoine, who teaches a language class at the Intertribal Friendship House in Oakland. She teaches Lakota, which is spoken in South Dakota where she is from. “There’s a very strong effort within the California peoples to revive their languages.”"

This is the symbol used to represent Oakland Intertribal Friendship House.

The Intertribal Friendship House is one of the oldest urban American Indian agencies in the United States. It's motto is "Our Urban Rez, Since 1955" relays the message of the importance the Intertribal Friendship House is to urban American Indians, who utilize the facility to hold community meetings, dinners and other events.

The agency began to serve American Indians who moved to the San Francisco Bay Area during the Relocation program in the early 1950s.

Below are some websites and a couple of exceprts of text from those websites.   I did not find a wikipedia for Oakland Intertribal Friendship House

August 2012

Greetings relatives,

We are writing you today to seek your support for the annual campaign for Intertribal Friendship House (IFH). Established in the 50s when native peoples were being relocated to urban areas to assimilate into mainstream society, expected to relinquish their cultural values and traditions, IFH was, and is, a vital touchstone for the native community. It is a place to build community, to maintain connection with traditional values, and to be with other native peoples. It is a place that affirms the cultures and traditions of the diverse indigenous peoples of this land, including the native Ohlone, Pomo and Miwok peoples, original occupants of this land we now call home. IFH embraces all tribes, and in friendship, provides a house, a home, where we can come together and practice our traditions, share with the broader community, and care for our relatives and future generations. In this way, we are building community.

IFH has been building community since 1955. Our regular scheduled activities include elders’ luncheons, powwows, drum and dance instruction, language classes, traditional gardening, food cooking classes, beading circles, youth development, and positive support groups. It offers a place to hold ceremonies, and most importantly a place for multigenerational healing.

IFH has many objectives we would like to realize in the coming year. In addition to continuing all our regular programming, we would like to add a film series, increase our regalia classes, basketry and other classes that focus on California tribes, and plan special programs for target groups including youth, parents, women, elders and families. We would like to expand our new “I Choose” program that focuses on lifestyle and health choices for the community. We would like to continue to offer the house facilities to groups for classes, meetings and community observances. We have capital goals including maintenance and improvement of the house facilities and equipment, a most needed roof repair, and acquisition of a van for transporting elders and youth to and from community events.

To help realize these goals we seek and need the support and involvement of the IFH community members, our friends, s/heroes and patrons. Your support is key to IFH’s wellbeing. We need the involvement of you all and hope that you value IFH and are able to support our programs and goals with a financial contribution. We hope that you will think of IFH as a worthy investment of your time and money.

We look forward to your continued participation at IFH and hope that you will share our request for support with all your relations as we build community together. As a key native virtue, and a core practice for IFH, we believe that generosity is to be practiced regardless of whether it is reciprocated. We give unconditionally, and appreciate that those who can, will give back, honoring both IFH and themselves. It is this spirit of giving that we seek and celebrate in our community. We also recognize that as relatives, our mutual interdependence is demonstrated in how we care for one another. IFH is veryimportant and we are committed to making sure it exists for generations to come! If you can help, your
tax-deductible donations will go a long way in sustaining community. Thank you for caring.

Thanks for the reminder Vicky, I hope to make it for part of this -- unfortunately I have some conflicting plans, but I should be able to catch part of it!

Hello!

Please excuse me for this slightly late reminder (though a reminder nonetheless): the first-ever Oakland Wiki History Edit-a-thon is this Sunday! This will be a fascinating way to meet other people with an interest in local history, and coming from the point of view of a Wikipedian a great opportunity to include rare images on Commons and well-researched local history content on Wikipedia.

Don’t forget a computer or some note-taking materials! Updates can be found in the Oakland Wiki on the project page here

Cheers!
