Hi all,
A reminder that our October meetup will take place on October 9th, 6.30pm at Double Union. Registration is here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Event:Bay_Area_Meetup_October_2025. We'll have a short presentation on collaborating with Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums based on the GLAM bootcamp that happened in DC last week, and organize for our upcoming lunch and learn series with the San Francisco Historical Society. Then have our usual coworking tables and editing support (as well as pizza and drinks. We will get non fuzzy drinks).
We also wanted to share with you our dashboard numbers; it appears that the 194 editors who have registered for our meetups since April have collectively added 342k words to wiki projects! The dashboard is set up to track edits of meetup participants for the month following the event, and demonstrate the impact of the meetups to sustain regular editing efforts. All stats here: https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/campaigns/bay_area_wikipedians_202520…

All are also welcome to the community event: The Life of a Wikipedia Editor, and How You Can Join on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM at North Beach Library.
Our November meetup will be November 14th. Registration here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Event:Bay_Area_Meetup_November_2025. We will be celebrating Wikidata's birthday with cake and lightning talks about open data. If you would like to talk about an open data project or knows someone with a cool open data project, please reach out!
Our December meetup will be on December 10th - please note the change of date! This is a Wednesday, to accommodate the SFPL librarian who will come to talk about using their databases and newspaper archives for editing local pages and news. This will also kickstart our local pages project, aiming to more systematically keep them updated and free of partisan interference. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Event:Bay_Area_Meetup_December_2025
Finally, please save the date for Sunday January 24th! SFPL has offered to host us in their event space at the main to celebrate Wikipedia's 25th birthday. If you have suggestions or requests for this event please add them here: https://drive.proton.me/urls/4G94X4Q26M#06SpjVtlQsnC
Other editing events
Do join the online lace editathons if you can! Still working out details for a colocated event on October 19.

Hi all,
Here are the notes from the meetup and links to the next two meetups:
Keeping in touch and getting help with editing
We have a lot of collaborative projects right now and email is not enough for the collaboration that needs to happen between meetups. Plus sending drafts or editing questions on the mailing list can be intimidating. So we started a Discord server (after discussing alternatives at length). If you have attended a meetup and would like to join, email bayareawikipedians(a)proton.me.
Calls for volunteers/help:
- Please join us in supporting the [lace on Wikipedia project](https://www.lacecouvige.com/threadsblog/enhancing-lace-content-in-…. Sundays September 28, and October 19, at 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm PDT, online ([registration here](https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScPxtgP3Tw0jLDsi130aaErv3CBG…). They'd like more experienced editors to help. We will also host an in-person group on October 19 to join the editathon.
- November 18 will be our first lunch and learn series with Bay Area historical and cultural organizations. Save the date and reply to this email if you'd like to join the crew. In particular it'd be great to have someone with a strong experience of Commons.
- December 11: The meetup will be focused on local news and pages. We will be inviting journalists and SFPL to discuss how to better keep those pages updated, how to access news and news databases for the library, etc.
- January 15, 2026 will mark Wikipedia's 25th birthday. If you have suggestions about the celebration, please add them to this document:https://drive.proton.me/urls/4G94X4Q26M#06SpjVtlQsnC
- Wiki Game Jam: We will be organizing a physical and digital game jam - powered or inspired by Wikimedia projects. We'd love more organizers and more people who like to make games.
If you'd like to help with any of this, please reply to this email or email directly bayareawikipedians(a)proton.me
You can also still join the panel at the North Beach Branch of the San Francisco library, October 7. Contact audiodude(a)gmail.com to get on the list.
Organizing committee and elections
We will be holding our yearly elections in October. Voting members will receive a separate invitation. As a reminder you can find our governance principles [here](https://meta.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/Bay_Area_Wikipedians_User_Group/Mem….
Organizing news
We have found a fiscal sponsor to pursue grant opportunities and support this programming. We're slowly but surely becoming a proper organization!

See you next month,
BAWUG organizing committee
Hi all,
A reminder for our meetup next Thursday, September 11, at Double Union:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Event:Bay_Area_Meetup_September_2025
Some logistics news:
- we have a new large screen for presentations; no more fiddling with the projector!
- we have a new video conference system and laptop, which per the test we did this week should resolve the issues we've encountered with jitsi previously. If that's not the case, we'll figure out an alternative videoconference solution
The meetup does not have a specific presentation, so if anyone wants to talk about a project or a tool, do let us know. Otherwise we will have our usual news, social time and coworking tables.
In particular, we will discuss with those interested:
- becoming a voting member of BAWUG
- news about the affiliates recognition process and next potential steps
- organizing an event for Wikipedia's 25th birthday in January (survey incoming)
- Wikimedia Game Jam
- how to build capacity to maintain pages on local and state news (see here why this is important: https://sfstandard.com/2025/08/27/san-francisco-daniel-lurie-wikipedia-poli…). We're thinking about a December event.
- the San Francisco Historical Society partnership: our first event has been scheduled for November 18! We will need extra volunteers.
See you Thursday,
@ElanHR, @e_mln_e, @audiodude (BAWUG organizing committee)
