Hi Farhad,
Thank you for sharing the recap from the event and these successes! It's so
great to see the pictures and the kids during the event.
In terms of your request #2, I'd love some more information about what an
official letter or backing could look like? Is this something that we've
done in the past? I'm wondering if perhaps this may be a request for the
Community Engagement team or someone else, to ask about how we can
acknowledge the support given by the regional leaders to make this event
happen. Let me know if there's an example you can share of a previous
letter of support, or I can connect you to someone in CE to talk about next
steps there.
Given the success of this event, I think it would be great if you would be
able to draft a blog about the event, the learnings from it, and
potentially even link to the English guide about Wiki Education
Implementation that you mention. We could post this on the Wikimedia blog
and amplify it there, to get the most visibility about your event. Is this
something doable? I'm happy to help support if you can put a draft together
- there are some draft guidelines here
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Blog/Guidelines> if needed.
Let me know your thoughts on next steps, Farhad. Thank you!

Dear Nadee and all,
This is to (1) give you some ideas about what you can Tweet about, (2)
request WMF support to help me develop the current success and (3) report
on progress since.
1. During the Wiki-program during 2019 IT BILER FORUM (July 17-20) the
team of International Wikimedia volunteers, aided by Nichole Saad of
Wikimedia Education & Amir Aharoni of Wikimedia Language teams, have
exposed over 600 children from Tatarstan to Wikimedia world and its
activities. We had 2 master-classes every day, usually in a large tent,
with kids being rotated between various IT activities on the forum grounds
- the total of children that heard about Wikimedia projects during the
event exceeded 2000.
The picture taken when Tatarstan President walked into the smaller
Wiki-tent of 2019 IT BILER FORUM (July 18) depicts all Wikimedians who
where on the site at the moment (see description @
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Farhad_Fatkullin_President_Minnikha…
)
The screen behind me then was either Tatar Wikipedia category for
non-qualified CEE Spring 2019 articles that I invited kids to start
editing, or a short link thereto
https://w.wiki/6Cs
You can find more pictures from the dedicated Commons category
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wiki-program_of_IT_BILER_FORUM
2. I would be grateful, if WMF can issue some official letter or a
certificate acknowledging the support and backing given to Wikimedia
movement development in Tatarstan by our two leaders:
* ex-President of the Republic, State Councillor of Tatarstan & UNESCO
Special Envoy for Intercultural Dialogue Mintimer Shaimiev - his personal
call and recommendation to one of the current Vice-Prime Ministers opened
the first door for us last summer, then continued after personal meeting
with him in October
* Current President Rustam Minnikhanov - who supported the Wiki-program
organization during IT BILER FORUM, as well as instructed local Department
of Education (elementary & secondary schools) and local University to start
working towards bringing "Wiki into Education"
3. Tatarstan Department of Education is grateful to see my first Russian
draft of a step-by-step Wiki Education implementation guide available @
https://w.wiki/69y
* I will start translating it into English today, so as to give a chance
to the international community to see what's there and comment on what else
can be added for Russia's non-Wikimedian teachers and kids have an easier
time during standard educational tasks onwiki - local department of
education contact said they will be grateful for International community
guidance.
* The preferred way for elementary and middle schoolers seems to be
developing Wikijunior @ ruWb & ttWb (
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1783751) - my reasoning was supported by
colleagues in Wikimedia Russia Telegram group, Wikimedia Armenia and
Wikipedia & Education UG member Susanna Mkrtchyan, and my contact in
Tatarstan Presidential Administration was very much excited about such a
development.

farhad

Farhad,
Thank you for putting together this extremely comprehensive list of
lessons
learned! This is really helpful to know as we hopefully work
together on future collaborations. I'm really glad to hear that Nichole's
talk was useful to those in attendance and that it went over so well. It's
also quite educational to hear about the regional priorities and the focus
on Tatar, especially the language. I know you must be quite busy at the end
of a big event, but if you do want to put together a blog about this event
and the successes let me know!
Thank you Farhad! While I know we couldn't make everything we wished
happen
for this event, hopefully we can work together in the future to do
so.
Cheers,
Nadee

2/3 of the audience in attendance (today we worked in a smaller tent with

have Wikimedia speakers introduce themselves, explain why they were on the
forum grounds and interact with the audience a bit (a fallback on the
original plan in my July 12 email).

should have used 10:30-11:30am UTC instead of 1:30-2:30pm MSK.

centered around bonding of youth
from their different thematic camps and
cross-pollination of ideas through
joint activities and contests. Education & skill development related
activities are only held at dedicated camps or clubs (like Selet WikiSchool
Spring & Fall sessions). Session participants are randomly selected, even
few organizers had a chance to listen to what all session speakers had to

Regional
department of Education unit director requesting me to provide
them within a week with a written step-by-step algorithm (guideline) in
Russian or Tatar on how their elementary & secondary teachers in all
subject areas working with all age-groups can start using Wiki in education
beginning this coming school year. I agreed to start looking at it
beginning July 22nd. The interest is in having students engage in content
creation, so I convinced them to start with Tatar Wikipedia, as the
community is less stringent or more tolerant about content without proper
referencing, categories, etc.
>

priorities
of Tatarstan President. He came into our tent when I was
speaking Russian, welcomed me smilingly, addressed me in Tatar using
phrases that communicated to all Tatar speakers his preference that I use
the regional language when delivering Wiki-related content. It's a clear
sign Mr.President wants to see more topics delivered / interpreted into
Tatar in Selet camps/forums. I was filmed giving the video interview in
Tatar today right before Nichole's session (which I actually started it in
Tatar as well), so I hope Selet will publish that video on Commons or its
CC-BY website for me to have a clear proof that I actually did speak Tatar
throughout the Wiki-session ;)
