I agree with Pine’s comments.

Some other comment about bank accounts: In the UK, my college is a registered charitable organisation and operates many accounts across the organisation. We had used Unity Trust Bank for years, although we recently changed. For several years there were various ethical reasons to bank with them and they supported online authorisation which was handy. We found that when someone unexpectedly went off sick we needed more that two board members to be able to authorise transactions. Paperwork that needs multiple physical signatures can be a bit of a headache. Recently we were advised to change supplier- over time fees had been introduced for things such as BACS which our financial people wanted to avoid.

There are enough banks or credit unions with an ethical banking policy to be able to pick one that has suitable facilities (although it is possible to have an ethical policy and a bad track record).

Commenting regarding bank accounts: Cascadia Wikimedians User Group has our account with the BECU credit union which serves our needs well, has low fees, and has good online access tools that provide a variety of authorization levels to people who can access accounts. I suggest that you look into credit unions for banking services.

I can work on opening a bank account.

I think I can find the tax ID number online; will let you know if I can't.

In terms of policy, account signers should be president and treasurer, with their actions further detailed by policy. In essence some things can *only* be authorized by the board while smaller transactions can be delegated.

Separation of responsibilities is important here. One effective model has one person ordering the transaction and another person carrying it out.

We will probably want at least one US-based board member as an account signer when neither the president nor the treasurer are based in the US. Since I'm opening the account I can be that person. I agree to operate at the direction of the board, and at the direction of the president and/or treasurer per policy.

1) Yes will need a US account.

2) This is movement strategy (we should of course take into account movement strategy as we determine our own strategy and hopefully our strategy will be partly reflected by the movement one).

Thanks for the update, James.
1 - Does this mean we need to consider a US account? James Hare, any updates on your end?
2 - Which strategy discussion are you referring to - of our foundation or the general movement ones?

Cheers,
Shani.

Hey All

Few updates from my side:

1) The bank I inquired at in Canada cannot open accounts for a US based charity.

2) I have volunteered to help facilitate the ongoing strategy discussion.
