Hi!
Japanese Wikipedia won the first prize of "Web of the year" in Japan! Congratulation! http://woy2007.sbcr.jp/ (Japanese page) # Sadly, they don't make English page :(
We won the prize last year also, this is for 2nd straight year.

Fortunately, we don't promote Wikipedia in Japan. It became popular naturally in these years.
And please write a news about this prize.

I have forwarded this message onto Wikinews-l. If you have any Japanese contributors that want to work on doing an article for en.wikinews I'd be delighted to help out, polish English, and put them on the right track.
Just tell them to drop me a mail or leave a note on my talk and dive in and start writing. I'll be stuck using Google or Babelfish to translate any Japanese sources (which always gives you some "interesting" turns of phrase).
We can then put that on our wikinewsreports blog which Google news picks up.
Oh, and as an aside I'm expecting a new report from David Shankbone in the next day or so. Yesterday the gaggle of technology journalists he's with met Shimon Perez, so I'm interested to see what - other than photos - we get from that.

I would *much* prefer a press release or similar action by the WMF than a Wikinews article. I am always uneasy by Wikinews' frequent articles about Wikimedia, which doesn't square with the NPOV, and it doesn't seem to be getting better.

Wikinews is a wiki. Volunteers are going to write about what interests them. I hope the article itself is written in an un-biased way, but you are really strecthing NPOV beyond credibility to say dictates whether an article can *exist* or not. By your measure en.WP violates NPOV because it covers a greater precentage of American towns than Japanese towns.

Not quite. I think a better comparison would be if en.wp had a different measure of notability for WMF-related topics compared to general. When it comes to news, what journalists choose to write about shows their judgement about what is important. Wikinews' disproportionate coverage of Wikimedia-related topics suggests that a different measure of notability or importance is used. Of course it's inappropriate to say something like "Wikinews can never write about WMF" but maybe there should be some guidelines encouraging wikinewsies to cover stories in proportion to their relevance or importance or whatever... well, maybe it is this:
from http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Wikinews:Content_guide "News is relevant. Being Wikinews — global and Internet-based — stories about local news may need to have their relevance explained for our international audience. Stories should appeal to a large number of people."
Would Wikinews write this story if the winner was YouTube?
Maybe Brian should sometimes funnel his considerable enthusiasm to http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_press_releases rather than Wikinews.

Brian,
Thank you for your cooperation. I'll tell this to Japanese contributers.

Now jawikinews version is being drafted at: http://ja.wikinews.org/wiki/Web_of_the_Year_2007%E3%81%AE%E7%B5%90%E6%9E%9C%...
I am happy to see our own article as collaboratively edited by the user commnunity. Another type of ours, the discussed press release from the Foundation would be another business and it would be also nice. It could include a message from Jimmy who visited the land twice this year and be sent to the Japanese press he'd ever intaracted as well as Japanese community members keep in touch with.
Cheers,

Hi,
Could someone able to read japanese please elaborate a bit on the impact of this prize? How big is the price, is it being covered by Japanese press etc to be able to indicate the impact in an article, press release etc? Because there are many of this kind of prices on the internet, and it would be nice to be able to show the impact. Thanks.

Hi Lodewijk,
This prize is presented by Yahoo related bublishing company and softbak group (organized Yahoo Japan), held 12th times till this year. In Japan, there are no more famous prizes than this, Wikipedia is the no.1 rated web site exactly.
Is this OK?
