Hi all,
I wanted to share an update on the Knowledge Equity Fund https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Knowledge_Equity_Fund, a grantmaking fund at the Wikimedia Foundation which was set up three years ago to address the movement strategy pillar around knowledge equity.
Since the Equity Fund first began, we’ve learned a lot about how we can be effective partners to the movement in addressing knowledge equity. Through multiple community conversations that we hosted in 2023, we heard comprehensive feedback about the goals and impact of the Knowledge Equity Fund that led us to make some key changes for our upcoming rounds of funding.
We recently published impact reports https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Knowledge_Equity_Fund/Grantee#Round_2_%E2%80%93_Narrative_and_Financial_reports from our last round of grantees, so you can learn more about their work.
We are also announcing https://diff.wikimedia.org/2024/10/09/announcing-the-newest-round-of-knowledge-equity-fund-grantees/ our third round of grantees. We will be giving grants to 13 organizations in 10 countries, supporting work to address knowledge gaps and create and share new knowledge.
We have also connected each of these grantees with regional and relevant partners in the Wikimedia movement, including local and established movement affiliates who can support knowledge equity work and help grantees learn about how to connect back to the work of free knowledge on the Wikimedia projects. We continue to look for ways to increase these connections and welcome your input.
Finally, we are sharing information about the future of the Knowledge Equity Fund. No new funds have been added to the fund since it was first started. With the remainder of the fund, we will run one last “round” in the next 4 months, where we will choose a handful of the most impactful grantees from the first rounds and provide them with a final “top up grant” to deepen their work with the movement and ensure that the content they create is present on the Wikimedia projects.
We welcome thoughts and questions about the Equity fund and the newest round of grantees on Meta https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Knowledge_Equity_Fund.
We will also be hosting two community calls on Wednesday, October 23:
-
ESEAP friendly time: 10am UTC -
Pacific friendly time: 4pm UTC
If you are interested, please reply to us to register.
Thank you,
Nadee Gunasena
