Hi, buddies.
I have searched Nabble for this topic, but only found one thread. Do we have our plan to participate this year?
I know some student in China want to join, anybody can help?
Thanks.
Regards, Mingli
WMF was a mentoring organization in 2006 and 2007. I assume it will happen again this year. Confirmation? What sorts of projects are being looked at this year?

They begin accepting applications for mentoring organizations in two days. Any word on this?

We're still very short-handed, so we'll see what we can do. We haven't really been able to support more than one or two projects in the last couple years.

A WYSIWYG editor would make a fantastic project for a developer to jump into. That's one that I personally would like to participate in, although I would need to do a lot of reading to get my PHP back up to par. Of course, it may be too ambitious for a single summer project.

Depends. http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/WYSIWYG_editor lists four not-quite-there WYSIWYG MediaWiki editors so far ...

Hmm.. i wouldn't be that keen on making a WYSIWYG editor a priority for MediaWiki. I agree that having a more friendly user interface for editing wiki articles would be great, but it has to be -really- given good thought, i don't think it's simply a question of integrating FCKeditor or TinyMCE in MediaWiki, we should first have a good concept on how you should edit wiki articles in a visual way.
Aside from that, a Google SoC project to improve usability and the user interface would be great and would really enhance the software. Maybe simplifying the way skins work is step one in that process?

What if the Foundation were to take advantage of the large number of researchers that are closely associated with the organization and could potentially serve as mentors? I don't know for certain that they would be willing to fill that role, but they might, and I can see a lot of code coming out of it that benefits the project.

I can not find pages about "Summer of Code 2008" on meta.
Will WMF be a mentoring organization in this event? Should we setup a page on meta to discuss all the proposals?
My proposal: A student from China want to work on a git-based wiki implement which may related to our projects. It might not be very useful immediately, but a proof of new concept.

These days we try putting things in the proper place rather than just tossing everything on meta. ;)
