Dear Wikimedians, On the recommendation of the Wikimania 2015 selection Jury Committee, we have accepted the proposal from Mexico DF to host. The proposal will be further vetted by the WMF staff in the coming month, after which time we hope to confirm the award. Please join us in congratulating Wikimedia Mexico! We would also like to thank the teams from Cape Town and Monastir as well for all their effort in putting together excellent proposals for our consideration. As a volunteer-led movement, it is hugely encouraging to have so many who want to support Wikimania. The bidding process requires a substantial time investment, and we are most grateful for every team’s hard work. For those of you who are considering hosting in future years, we expect to issue the Request for Proposals for 2016 by September this year. Congrats to Wikimedia Mexico. :) I have only one concern about possibly attending a Mexico City Wikimania, which is safety. The bid on Meta sort of acknowledges this by saying "Safety is like any big city, some areas are unsafe at night". Thanks to all for your kindly regards and comments :) Steven, concerning to the public safety, our city are different from the known issues of the northern states of the country. In the link you quote for United States citizens are properly pointed for Mexico City: "no advisory is in effect". Also, the Centro Historico area (the venue are in the north of this Downtown area) is safe for tourism. Not a small concern. But, I should point out, one that we've dealt with before. We had laptops stolen in Argentina, and physical safety concerns in Alexandria, as I recall. In this context, I think it's worth pointing out that one of the more likely scenarios for an incident involves attendees traveling to or from the conference. Wikimania regularly brings in people who, whether for cost reasons, side journeys, or out of enthusiasm for modes other than air travel, may not be flying directly in and out. If anyone chooses to travel overland, they would be well advised to take careful precautions as to safe routes and methods.
