My name is James Campbell, and I’m excited to write my first post to this list. I’m new to working on Wikimedia-related projects and wanted to share an idea I’m passionate about called Wikigration.

The inspiration for this project comes from a significant challenge many immigrants like myself and refugees face: accessing reliable, up-to-date immigration advice. Unfortunately, much of this information is locked behind private Facebook groups, paid services like lawyers, or inaccessible due to outdated public resources.

In an increasingly uncertain world, where migration is on the rise, finding even basic information—such as which residency permits to apply for or how to rent housing —can be daunting, especially for those who don’t know where to start looking.

Wikigration aims to address this gap by creating a free, user-friendly wiki where immigrants and refugees can find accurate, crowdsourced, and collaboratively maintained information. This resource would bring together the wealth of informal knowledge already being shared in private groups and make it publicly accessible to help people successfully migrate and integrate.

I envision Wikigration as a future Wikimedia sister project, aligned with the mission of making knowledge freely available to everyone. I’d love to hear from the community about:

• Steps I should take to align with the Wikimedia Foundation’s standards and processes.
• Guidelines to follow to ensure this becomes a successful, endorsed project.
• Insights or advice from similar projects within the movement.
