Today 8 March, on International Women’s Day, Wikimedia Sverige and the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs are pleased to welcome you to participate in WikiGap Challenge. This is the online competition where volunteers around the world work hard to create, improve and translate biographic articles on women. The Challenge will last 8 March to 8 May.

The WikiGap campaign is more than just an event: it has grown to be a movement in itself, building on the same values as other gender equality projects in the Wikimedia Movement, such as Women in red

Four out of five biographies on Wikipedia portray men. At the same time, women, transgendered and non-binary people make up more than half of the population. As a movement, we need to do more to make sure that the gender gap on Wikipedia is closed.

This year, we have a special focus on climate change and environment, where you can earn extra points for writing articles about women trying to help solve the climate crisis. Read, translate and improve the women on this list. More names will be added to the list throughout the campaign.

We also encourage you to pay special attention to Ukraine’s Cultural Diplomacy Month and write articles about women connected to this theme. It is extra important in times like this.

More than 60,000 articles have been created or improved over the years, but there’s more work that needs to be done. Therefore, we encourage you to participate in the Challenge. Sign up and read more about the details on the Meta page.

See you in the WikiGap Challenge 2022!
