Hi Mohamed,

Great question. When we choose the languages for translation, we use a variety of factors—traffic to the wikis, covering the official United Nations languages, the languages into which we’ve translated the policy in the past, and geographic diversity. We expanded the languages into which we provided translations of the Privacy policy with this update, and we plan to continue that expansion in future.

As for the text of the translated policies, we want to make sure that the translations accurately reproduce the original English version. We include a note in the policies that the English version of the policy controls if there are any issues with translations—that way, if some nuance is lost or added during the process of translation, it’s clear which meaning we intended, and which will be acted upon.

We also know that we will not catch every nuance, and this is why we’re happy to get feedback from staffers and members of the communities who are familiar with languages besides English. In the past, we have made adjustments when someone has noticed that a translation may not entirely capture the meaning of the English original.

Best,

Aeryn

Yes, that's very helpful, thank you very much. Follow-up question, when choosing the languages where you hire the translation service for wikis' Privacy Policy, do you take into consideration the legal aspect of it? And, generally speaking, is there a legal revision of translations?

Hi Mohamed,

Thanks for the question! The process is a little different depending on the policy: the policies for the Store and for our non-wiki sites are translated by a translation service. (The Wikipedia Store is undergoing some construction at the moment, and will be up in more languages soon.) The Donor privacy policy is also translated by a service. We hire an external service to do the translations because we do not currently have a team that is dedicated solely to translation work, and the policies are often very long documents.

The Privacy policy that applies to the wikis is translated in part by a translation service, and in part by the communities who are working in each language. The English version of the policy is put on Meta and marked for community translation. We also provide translations in a small number of languages, but we can’t cover every language in which there’s a Wikimedia project. So users are able to translate the policy into the language(s) they speak, allowing for coverage of more languages. We are hoping to expand further and provide translations in more languages in future. We also appreciate feedback on the translations we provide—sometimes, someone will notice that the translation service has had trouble capturing the proper spirit of the policy (especially as it relates to technical wiki terms), and we want to make sure the translations are useful and accurate. I hope that helps!

Best,

Aeryn

Thank you very much, Aeryn. I'm working on translating Global Voices privacy policy, and wanted to ask (as we are structured similarly in terms of multilingual communities) if the process of translation of the privacy policy is done entirely by the respective community? Or how is the workflow?

Best,

Hi Everyone,

The Foundation has just published a post on Diff with an overview of some small changes we are making to our privacy policies: https://diff.wikimedia.org/2021/06/21/small-updates-to-the-wikimedia-foundations-privacy-policies/.

In summary, our general privacy practices are not changing. These changes are minor and were made to make our language more consistent, and to provide more information about how to make requests regarding the personal data we collect.

Please take a look at the Diff post for more information. If you have questions or comments, please contact us at privacy@wikimedia.org. Thanks everyone, and take care.

Best,

Aeryn Palmer
