Cite templates are against wiki-text philosophy.
Would you care to elaborate? Wiki-text doesn't really have a philosophy, it's just what developers felt was a good idea at the time (and later regretted in many cases, I believe!). It's generally intended to be simple to use, but cite templates are certainly simpler to use than writing out the reference by hand, so I don't know what you mean...
