Surely the success of Wikipedia isn't in the field of e-commerce but
in many other areas, including collaborative work, publication,
discourse praxis etc? The last fundraising venture went well, but this
doesn't seem so relevant. More relevant, I think, is the notion of
Wikipedia as a 'Community of practice', which has masses of
literature, the most prominent author being Etienne Wenger. This is a
big theory in the field of information/knowledge management and is
being taken on by managers in large companies trying to improve their
own practice/business. I'm writing my own paper for Wikimania partly
about the success (and shortcomings) of this notion in Wikipedia and
furthering it in my masters, and there's much more research going on;
see

Is this helpful or is there an e-commerce aspect to wikimedia that I'm
not aware of?
