Hi everyone,
It is with great pride and joy that we announce the approval of Wikimedia Community User Group Georgia as a Wikimedia Chapter, to be known as Wikimedia Georgia, effective September 5th 2025.
This recognition marks a historic milestone for the Wikimedia movement in Georgia, reflecting the community’s unwavering dedication, resilience, and commitment to advancing free knowledge.
We would also like to note that while the Affiliations Committee has announced a pause on new recognitions, the process for Wikimedia Georgia was already in its final stage at the time of that decision. Given the advanced stage of their application, Wikimedia Georgia was exempted from the pause.
The journey to becoming a Wikimedia Chapter has been shaped by years of community-driven efforts. Since its recognition as a User Group in 2015, Wikimedia Georgia has:
-
Fostered community growth through events, training, and outreach activities at national and international levels.
-
Established itself as a legally registered non-profit in 2019, strengthening its ability to partner with institutions and cultural organisations.
-
Successfully led initiatives promoting Wikimedia projects, knowledge equity, and free access to information in Georgia.
-
Demonstrated strong governance, inclusivity, and the capacity to sustain impactful programs.
As a Chapter, Wikimedia Georgia is now positioned to:
-
Build deeper partnerships with educational, cultural, and governmental institutions.
-
Advocate for open knowledge and digital inclusion at national and regional levels.
-
Support and represent contributors in Georgia through structured programs and public engagement.
This recognition strengthens the Wikimedia movement in the Caucasus region and highlights the power of collaboration, community spirit, and persistence. We celebrate this achievement and look forward to Wikimedia Georgia’s continued leadership in advancing our shared mission.
Please join us in congratulating the members of Wikimedia Georgia on this significant milestone!
Best wishes, Jeffrey Keefer Chair, Affiliations Committee
