I like this idea as a repository of knowledge. Oral history is a remarkable
took, when used correctly, as it personalizes major events and provides
insights into events that would not otherwise be available to researchers.
Furthermore, we live in one of the most exciting periods in history, with outstanding
events that need recording before the people who witnessed them are no
longer around to tell their story.
I would support a project like this, however, I would ask that it follow
certain strict guidelines so as to help sift through the stories.
Thanks for the comments, Mav.
In my conception (hardly original or final), Wikimemory would focus on
common, significant, historical *experiences* rather than the
individuals. The top level categories in Wikimemory would, then, be
historical experiences: "The Vietnam War," "The Cultural Revolution,"
"Encounters with Jimmy Carter," "The Red Sox winning the World Series,"
"The Beatles Final Concert," "Hurricane Katrina" and so on. Pretty much
anything with a witness, a place, a date and a bit of significance to
"your community" (very broadly defined) would fit.
Both Wikipeople and (to a lesser extent) Wikimemorial seem focused on
individuals, and that seems to me to be a separate, important kind of
information. Does that make sense?
Linking the experiences recorded in Wikimemory with entries on the
witnesses in Wikipeople is a great idea, though.

The bidding process has started at the beginning of this month. (see
here: http://mail.wikimedia.org/pipermail/foundation-l/2005-September/004184.html)
All bids should be on meta and follow the rules explained here:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2006/Official_requirements_for_pot…,
that's also where you will find the official bids, if they are listed,
of course (I just added Cleveland to the list ;-) )
Thank you and hurray for the first European applications!
Best,
Delphine

Hopefully we have backups of Wikisource's content...
I went to Wikisource to archive some press releases, got this message when I
clicked on the link from the en.wikisource.org
<http://en.wikisource.org>mainpage
The database did not find the text of a page that it should have found,
named "Press".
This is usually caused by following an outdated diff or history link to a
page that has been deleted.
If this is not the case, you may have found a bug in the software. Please
report this to an administrator, making note of the URL.
I tried clicking on other pages, like "Historical documents" and "The Jewish
State", all came up with page specific variants of this message.

Dear Friends:
I've proposed a new wiki--Wikimemory (or Wikimemoir, or IWasThereWiki,
or something better). It's logged in the Meta section on new proposals.
Here's the pitch:
The idea is to provide a place where anyone can record his or her
memoirs of historically significant events. Most everyone has
participated in such occurrences. Take, for example, the hundreds of
thousands who were affected the recent tragedy in New Orleans.
Unfortunately, there is no repository for the storage of the memories of
such people. Their experiences can neither be shared with others today
(I, for one, would like to read first-hand accounts of the New Orleans
floods), and they will be lost to history tomorrow. In ten, one hundred
or one thousand years, the memoirs of those "who were there" will be
very valuable. Wikimemory will, I hope, allow people all over the world
to record their experiences, share them with others, and pass them to
the future. I've created a mock-up of the site at
http://memoirbank.com/.
A nice tag line for the site: "Everyone has a story. Make yours
history."
I'd love to hear what you think.

I'm not entirely sure if I've done the best job here to get this going,
but at least I'm trying. As per the schedule that I proposed to earlier
(and got absolutely no objection or notice of any kind about the time to
start this vote) the voting is starting today and will last through
November 1st (that is about six weeks of voting). We have the
"required" minimum of five different languages for this vote, but it
would be nice to add a couple of other languages for this process as
well... especially Spanish. If you can help translate especially the
voting page, it would be appreciated. This is just a simple yes or no
vote if you want to see this project started. Voting can be done
through this page on meta:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikiversity/Vote
(find the language you are most comfortable with)
Please add discussion about the proposal on the main Wikiversity page on
Meta, or in the respective "beta" project pages that have already started.
The following announcement was also translated, so it can be added to
the "water cooler" sections of each sister project, as appropriate for
each language. I'll try to do it as time permits, and I'm trying to
disseminate this announcement as far and as wide as I can:

Hello all,
I asked FishBase (http://www.fishbase.org; there are articles about it in
nl:, en: and de:) to share their data with us to write articles.
I think we can have a productive cooperation, but I'm not sure yet about the
exact things. I forward their mail for your information.
Cheers,

Dear Jelle S. Zijlstra,
Collaboration between FishBase and Wikipedia is indeed a good idea. As a
first step we can deep-link from FishBase to all pages in Wikipedia that
contain information on fishes. All we need for this is a list of the
scientific names and the respective Wikipedia URLs. We would expect similar
links from Wikipedia into FishBase. We can provide a respective list of
scientific names and FishBase URLs. I am not sure how that would then be
implemented in Wikipedia. Given that we are talking about 29,000 species
manual editing is not an option.
A next step would be to create new species pages directly from FishBase as
new postings in Wikipedia. We can create a routine that would put together
the respective information. Again I am not sure how that would then be
incorporated in Wikipedia, as again manual entry is not an option. Maybe you
can establish contact to colleagues who have direct access to the database
behind Wikipedia?
I copy this to some colleagues who may have additional ideas or
suggestions.
Greetings
Rainer

Hello,
I am user Ucucha from the Dutch Wikipedia (http://nl.wikipedia.org).
Wikipedia, as you may know, is an online encyclopedia under GNU-FDL that can
be edited by anyone.
I think we have too few articles about fish in our encyclopedia. I think it
might be possible to make pages automatically from the FishBase database.
Such a page should not include too much information, I think. A good start
would be a taxobox (see for example
http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zwarte_dwergmeerval), author, distribution, and
a link to the full record in FishBase.
It's my opinion that this will be good for both FishBase and Wikipedia. For
FishBase, because this will make FishBase better known under our many
visitors. For Wikipedia, because it's important for us to have articles
about all subjects, so that we can cover a broad range of subjects.
Furthermore, this will make these fish species better known, which is
probably a common goal of ours, isn't it?
Yours sincerely,
Jelle S. Zijlstra

Bonjour
