Dear colleagues,
Please join me in congratulating our colleagues of the Greek Wikipedia,
upon reaching 100000 articles, a symbolic milestone for Wikipedias.
Some of them are on this list, but a lot more people would see and
appreciate your message on-wiki, so you can sign and (if you like) add a
message in your language, here:

I have made a proposal to relax the scope of the Commons so-called Precautionary principle to allow the site to host more of the locally public domain files that are being deleted because of the US URAA law, and also to keep more photos that have freedom of panorama in their home country but which might (or might not) be copyright-protected in the US.
This proposal comes out of an extremely long and complicated argument about copyright, which you don't necessarily need to get into, but it is an attempt to allow Commons to host more media files while at the same time ensuring that the site remains fully legal under US law. We can legally take a much more nuanced position than 'Definitely Free' or 'Definitely Unfree', which is pretty much what we do at present.
Some editors have suggested ignoring US law, which the WMF simply cannot allow to happen, and this is an attempt to allow us to keep more non-US Public Domain material while still remaining on the right side of US law.
Put simply, do you agree that Commons should aim to host more files that are public domain in their home country even if they *might* still be copyright-protected in the US?

Hi folks,
Sorry for crossposting.
In past days Wikimedia Mexico had its first general assembly of members. In
that assembly we elected a new board for our non-profit association,
therefore we want to introduce you the new authorities. In advance, I tell
you that Ivan Martínez is WMMX president newly but now with a definitive
appointment.
Please, make the changes that you consider pertinent in Meta pages, mailing
lists and your personal directories.
*WMMX's first Annual General Assembly of Members*
As it is written in our bylaws we must hold an annual members general
assembly. Since our legal founding our board was and temporary one. On
March 1, 2014 we celebrate our first assembly where our president Iván
Martínez gave to members an inform of activities, we receive new members,
we vote the amount of the membership fee and we elect new board.
We have an excerpt of the act of that assembly which is in spanish:
https://mx.wikimedia.org/wiki/Primera_asamblea_general_ordinaria
*New Board*
As results of that assembly we have a new board which is definitive and
will serve two years, that is, till March 2016. You probably know some of
them and we hope you will know the rest of them soon. The appointment of
some of us just changed. So, this is the structure of our new definitive
board:
*- President: Iván Martínez. *

This week's issue of the English Wikipedia Signpost delivers mildly
shocking news about the opinion of a "prominent female Wikimedian (...)
about the meaning of the movement and the role of the chapters" as
expressed during the Boards training workshop that took place between
March 1-2 in London.
The Wikimedian is quoted by the treasurer of Wikimedia Deutschland,
Steffen Prößdorf, as saying: "if we can buy free knowledge, we should do
that [and] just forget about the communities" and "Fuck the community,
who cares."
I understand that the identity of the person will remain secret, given
that there is no public list of attendees of the workshop, so let me
just say that the idea that chapters can "fuck the community" is
absolutely unacceptable and should by rejected by all chapters immediately.

Have there been any discussions of the link between the purposes that Wikimania serves and the Strategic Plan?
I'm interested in thinking about what kinds of resources are appropriate for Wikimania especially regarding attendance for grants committee members. To make the case for significant committee attendance I think I need to know what the strategic purposes of Wikimania are. (:
Thanks,
Pine
I'm cross-posting this email from Wikitech-l from Greg Grossmeier. I think wide distribution is appropriate especially for contributors who may use vulnerable off-wiki communication tools with their Wikimedia password or for Wikimedia activity.

Yesterday a widespread issue in OpenSSL was disclosed that would allow
attackers to gain access to privileged information on any site running a
vulnerable version of that software. Unfortunately, all Wikimedia
Foundation hosted wikis are potentially affected.
We have no evidence of any actual compromise to our systems or our users
information, but as a precautionary measure we are resetting all user
session tokens. In other words, we will be forcing all logged in users
to re-login (ie: we are logging everyone out).
All logged in users send a secret session token with each request to the
site and if a nefarious person were able to intercept that token they
could impersonate other users. Resetting the tokens for all users will
have the benefit of making all users reconnect to our servers using the
updated and fixed version of the OpenSSL software, thus removing this
potential attack.
As an extra precaution, we recommend all users change their passwords as
well.
Again, there has been no evidence that Wikimedia Foundation users were
targeted by this attack, but we want all of our users to be as safe as
possible.
Thank you for your understanding and patience,
Greg Grossmeier
