Hi,
I've been working on the foundation wiki for three days now, and I wrote
two comments on the local Babel :
http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Wikimedia:Babel#Miscellaneous
Summing it up, it's about cleaning up the wiki using an inventory I
built (I need comments on its entries) and about changes in the look 'n
feel. I think one can answer on my talk page on Meta[1], or on any Meta
page that would be convenient for such a discussion[2].
I noticed this would-be discussion to several people, but got a few
feedback only (both Wikimania and "the lost page on the lost wiki" can't
help :)), so Angela advised me to send an email to foundation-l.
Thank you!

According to several Wikipedians living in Mainland China (excluding
Hong Kong and Macao), the GFW block on Wikimedia has been upgraded to
a new a level, it seems that:
* Official Wikimedia proxies are blocked;
* "zh.wikipedia.org" becomes a URL-level keyword for GFW.
The upgrade was noticed and reported as early as August 7, 2006 9:30 UTC.
This upgrade coincided with a Beijing News (新京報) report on Wikipedia.
Sources cited: the forwarded message below (in English), and a
discussion at zh_wikipedia@googlegroups (in Chinese).
More information should be available.
Please feel free to post messages in Chinese on this discussion
thread, they will be translated into English. (本討論線中的中文信件會被翻譯為英文.)
If it is not appropriate to discuss this matter in public here, we may
continue the discussion in private methods, please advise.
Best regards and wishes.

Subject: [Wikipedia-l] GFW upgrade block level for Wikipedia
To: wikipedia-l(a)wikimedia.org
After a report from Xinjingbao(The Beijing News,
http://www.thebeijingnews.com/ ) on Wikipedia, yesterday afternoon the Great
firewall of Chinese government upgrades its block level for Wikipedia. Today
many Wikipedia users in China report that they can not access Wikipedia via
the official proxy provides by MediaWiki Fundation.
This is a another bad news for Mainland Chinese Wikipedians again. Seems
hopeless for them.

Back on topic since I have wiki work to do, the enwiki dumps are busted
and frozen
for the enwiki.
Is the dump going to be skipped for enwiki for this period? If so, I
will perform the
updated translation runs on the previos build and post them.
Thanks
Jeff
Sorry for my English. To prevent loss of data, is possible to upload all
video and audio files from Wikimania 2006 in Wikimedia servers? Keeping this
only in freehosting services isn't a good idea.
Does anyone know when the enwiki dump will get fixed?
In response to Fred, I doubt you will ever get any of the ISP's on
anyone's side but their own. They have no incentive to listen
and Wikipedia has a serious credibility problem with many of them due to
the fact that any of the 600+ admins can file these
reports, and many of them are malicious and spoofed. Your suggestion
they should only come from the ARBCOM is a good
one. Last time an administrator sent an ISP complaint in on me last
year, the email was thrown in the trash -- and after they
reviewed the article on me and the press issues with the JFK story, they
told me they won't ever accept them again from
Wikipedia.
There's also the problem with the Asian ISP's -- they could care less
and won't respond, esspecially the ones in Taiwan --
I've tried.
Jeff
I've been putting together a complaint to send to Tiscali about one of
their subscribers breaching their TOS on wikipedia (may not work but
worth a try). The problem is that the person caused most of the
trouble they did while logged in. Thus checkuser is required to get
hold of the IPs. Releasing these IPs would require foundation
permission. Tiscali would also likely need to be able to contact the
foundation to confirm any claims. I believe this gives us three
options.
I send Tiscali the email without IPs and with the foundation's contact
information. This is likely to archive nothing since Tiscali would
have to contact the foundation before starting an investigation
The foundation gives me the IPs. This would allow Tiscali to begin an
investigation but they would probably still have to contact the
foundation. This has the disadvantage that the foundation has to
release the IPs to me (even though I already know the range and
Tiscali IPs don't tell you much I can understand the foundation not
wanting to do this).
The foundation co opts my email and sends it itself. This allows it to
keep the IP data private and removes possible barriers. On the other
hand this could result in more work for the foundation.
I assume this situation will arise in future thus I am trying to start
a general discussion as well as seeking answers for this specific
case.

Sorry for the post under the wrong subject - I receive digest and
forgot to change it. Anyway:
I have created a site at http://speedwiki.elwiki.com/ which I am now
setting up. I will start it there, and hope to move to WikiMedia soon.
I will now update the links in the Meta, and then go to sleep (02:09, germany).
Maybe somebody already feels like contributing...
Anyways, good night / gute nacht!

The Native Cherokee Translation project is a work in progress.
Jeff
The idea behind the project is not to provide simple how-to's - it is
to provide people with ready-to-use code snippets, or quick-guides on
how to achieve certain (usually computer-related) things very fast,
sometimes by doing a simple copy-and-paste.
I personally am actually more interested in the computer side (i.e.
copy-paste, etc.), but I am more than sure that wiki users will be
able to make a lot from it.
