Being bold has always been an guiding principle in Wikimedia projects.
Starting from scratch, we've come a very long way by believing in what we
thought was possible. We made possible what seemed impossible, just by
simply doing it.
Many in the board seem to believe that a Wikipedia without showing sponsor's
logo's is impossible. I don't believe that. I think a Wikipedia without
sponsor's logo's is possible, as it has been in the past.
I would like to ask the Board to boldly believe in the future. Don't give in
to demands from sponsors or donors, don't give in to the principle of
independence, not just a tiny little bit.
Please live up to that guiding principle of being bold!
Best regards,

Seen this? Saw it in a Google ad:

A wiki for teachers of English as a second or foreign language. CC-by-sa 2.5.
Any crossover with the planned teaching aid aspects of our projects?
Pity about the licence incompatibility.

Hoi,
In the past I have urged for a better support for the translators who
work on the localisation of MediaWiki. I expressed that in BetaWiki we
have an environment where it is much easier for translators to work. It
does not require expert knowledge about thinks like Subversion and
Bugzilla. One added benefit is that many people can work on the
localisation of MediaWiki for the same language making it very much more
a Wiki approach.
I have asked Nikerabbit, who has been hosting the BetaWiki wiki, if it
were possible to make changes to the MediaWiki software available in an
extension. He has done so, and Brion permitting it can be implemented
elsewhere.
The reason for the extended list of recipients of this mail is, that in
my opinion the best place to concentrate the "SpecialTranslate"
extension is the Incubator. The reason is that when a project is being
prepared for a full project status, the localisation is very much part
of this preparation. With the localisation being part of the incubation,
the work done will be preserved when it moves from incubation to
production. Also it provides instant gratification while it is still in
the incubator stage.
For the other projects, it is as good a place as any. Having it in
Incubator concentrates the localisation effort and for the benefits this
provides I would propose to do all the localisation using the
SpecialTranslate in Incubator.
Finally I want to thank Nikerabbit both for hosting BetaWiki and for
modifying the software so that we can have it as part of a WMF project.
Thanks,
GerardM
I need this extension:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Chr2syl
installed on the Cherokee Wikipedia. Is there a page somewhere on meta
for this purpose to request Brion to install the
extension for editing in Sequoyah Syllabary? I did not see a page for
requesting extensions installed. I know when I install
extensions, I have to do it from the unix login and its not normally
possible to install them from the web interface.
Any assistance would be appreciated.
Thanks
Jeff
Just because logo of Virgin Unite is on The Wikimedia Foundation websites, everyone has the make a big deal.
Everyone who is in The Wikimedia Foundation wants money for the Foundation and always seems to ask or has new fundrasing tips or news.
If the Foundation needs the donations, they would need listen to these fuckers to are in their 90's and has nothing better to do then play a "Game"!
This is just a game! I will no logger support the Foundation if this happens!

I've just had a great idea.
For the next fundriasing WMF says: "to run our projects we need to raise X$ in the next two weeks." Without doublings, ads, and stuff.
If after 2 weeks the sum raised is less than the X$ needed, the Foundations says: "You didn't gave us enough money. Can we put ads?"
If the answer is no, just shut the whole damn thing down.
Sometimes people needs a slap in the face to understand.

It is of course very nice of Virgin Unite to match the donations
received today. I would argue however that having a logo in the
site notice is basically an advertisement for Virgin.
There is nothing wrong per se with advertisements, but it is my
belief that that logo is a bad precedent if Wikipedia's goal is
to be advertisement-free.

Hi
it would be useful, if more users from the foundation list subscribe as well to the new project for wiki: wiki-search.
http://search.wikia.com/wiki/Search_Wiki
The mailinglist subscribe is here:
http://lists.wikia.com/mailman/listinfo/search-l
The archive to read some good threads already is here:
http://lists.wikia.com/pipermail/search-l/2006-December/date.html
Three comments.
1.) wiki search should be in cooperation with the foundation. Each wikipedia needs a search box. so subscribe to search-l.
2.) Google is quick and reads here as well, so we need not only open source but as well open strategy to enter the market. As there was already the idea to ship a bundled software packet and bundle it with the cspace messenger, google polished very quick the google software packet and as well the toolbar and announced today to make google talk "the" VOIP telephone and messenger... So.. be aware, that only the community sense of wikipedia will be the core competency, and not rating or human rating or open source algorythms or a few servers. This means the foundation is the part we need in this project and as well the wikipedia community, which means we need the name "wiki" in the name for the search engine of wikipedia for external sites.
3) if a name is requested, then as said wiki is needed. and: there was the thread to use the open source code of yacy.net p2p search engine and website indexer. As Yacy is Spoken like Jacky Onassis and Jim is the father of wiki search, we could call this whole project "Jim ´n Jack" or better "JJ". This means to built a JJ-Search or JJ-wiki. So please start early to register the domains.
"JJ" is better than Jah Jah or google and evern better than Stan and Oli.
JJ sounds like a Jojo, we all remember from days when we were young.
JJ is the new way to searc decentral and if p2p yacy is shipped as a deamon of a buddylist http://cspace.in , then we could have as well a messenger called "JJ"-Space. Not "my" space but a cspace clone caled JJ´s
place.
Well, this is not yahda yahda, this is the phrase of asking yopur JJ´s, which means your buddies in the cspace buddylist or the p2p engine jj-search, which will have as well a search-box in the friendslist window like icq, openeing the yacy search in the browser.
JJ is quite a good name for a p2p search engine and p2p buddylist? isn´t it
? its the JJ-Wiki-"C"(ommunity)space for all questions, the web can answer.
Ask the Wiki-Community-Space "jj"
What do you think (please answer to the search-list and subscribe there.)
kind regards tom

Perhaps we can get going on creative new ideas for fundraising!
